Sedo regs the domain Trafficz.de & points to a park page!!

Just when I think I've got a handle on the moral, legal and ethical aspects of domain ownership and investment, along come today's DomainTools.com blog post.

It seems Sedo.com has registered the domain Trafficz.de, which opens on a Sedo page with info about domain parking!!

I have never seen a DomainTools blog post fill up so quickly with comments, all of which appear to think that what Sedo has done is beneath the rating scale.

Any comments out there from more experienced domainers, versed in legal / TM / ethical matters?

They are the M$ of domains. Its sad to watch a company turn to crap.

The domain industry is already fighting an overall negative image among many non-domainers, last thing it needs is a high-profile company in the business making it worse.

I don't see how taking the moral high ground is possible in an industry plagued by TM infringement, cybersquatting, typosquatting, reverse hi-jacking, domain theft, rigged drop market, fraudulant sunrise applications and whois crawling. If anything I am shocked when a company is moral. Can you name one?

On the bright side, domaining is viewed by most people in better regard than the adult business ... but I digress.

While the shenanigans of the domain name business are disturbing, the alternative is heavy government regulation, such as with physical real estate - lots of regulations, tons of paperwork, high fees / taxes, etc.

Getting back to the topic at hand ...

Sedo's target market is domainers - many of whom read the various domain forums, blogs, etc ... Sedo already has lost much goodwill in the past year... regging names of other well known services will likely hurt Sedo even more - often market-forces will help even out the playing field ... it's very likely Sedo will lose much more than they think due to their most recent action of registering Trafficz.de.

Collectively, domainers are pretty smart - many will figure that a parking company, which Sedo basically is, that engages in "passing off" is probably involved with other questionable activities, such as shaving parking stats, etc and as a consequence will avoid / take their business elsewhere.

I am actually thinking the opposite. Well it depends on whom you ask.

I have always thought that reputable parking companies like Sedo would polish the image of domaining among the public at large. Turns out I was wrong as this kind of actions gives a bad rep to the industry as a whole :td:

On another note, I could register any domain in the name of someone else (Thanks to that gaping hole in the registration system) - for example register "HillaryClintonPicksHerNoseInPublic.com" and register it in the name of "The Romney Campaign" and create my own little controversy, no? Any reason to believe that could have happened here? I just find it hard to believe that the CEO of Sedo could do something that stupid unless I'm missing something huge here.

Just make sure you have control of the email address. :D
