.tv Premium TV Names being dropped - Is this a good sign or bad?

Recently, especially over this past week, there seems to have been a bIG spate of premium TV names being dropped (or even being almost given away at incredibly low prices).

One one hand it looks quite bleak - as though people are giving up on TV names in some way.

On the other, it could be said this is the natural 'streamlining' of the industry as domainers turned developers begin to get rid, or offload, much of their unwanted 'premium' inventory as their key projects begin to take flight.

I have my view, that being this is a clear sign of people concentrating on quality rather than quantity. I think this is evident by the fact that many of these names are quickly snapped up...

... but I would like to know what others think?

dman it! are you still flip flopping! Mike! You have had good sales for crying out loud!

Anyhow dropping these names is not good or bad for .Tv as a whole. It is has more to do with circumstance than market trends. Why would someone drop exercising.tv a non premium, it depends on the owners situation, its a calculated risk.

For some the drop is a great thing as they wanted the names and could not previously register them. :)

I think a couple of things are going on here. Some over-extended themselves in the mini landrush around this time last year and have decided to let some of their premiums go. Secondly, over the last 12mths, development has come to the forefront and certain people have decided on certain niches in which they want to concentrate their efforts. This has led to a number of excellent premiums being dropped as they do not fit into their business model. JMHO

I noticed that too ... it could be an ominous sign ... if a few hands control

alot of the .TVs not many may get developed ... not many get developed,

branding .TV stops ... I personally believe RR should consider another 70%

premium cut across the board again to give .TV another boost especially

in light of the new TLDs that will be coming out shouting for attention.

I wouldn't worry about this. More large businesses are getting into .tv every day. It is simply the market correcting itself, and will even out. Give it a few months.

From my perspective, some over extended, but there is also a lot more going on. Those of us who are involved in the Internet beyond .tv or domaining have projects that are taking off. You don't always know where or what project will take off and you want to harvest the opportunities that look most promising. For me, I invested in a significant number of domains >500, expecting to develop less than 10. I will either sell those that I don't develop, or let them drop. Does that mean the end of the world? Absolutely not. I bought 500+ domains to survey and preserve the opportunities that they represented. Once I identified those that represented the best opportunities to me, then the costs for acquiring all of the others simply represented opportunity costs. Hopefully more people will understand what this business is about if they watch the business cycle and they watch people who demonstrate a track record of success. Watch and study those people. They are the ones you want to learn to emulate.

For those that want to read a thread that motivates people to question the state of the .tv extension because a big premium was sold for virtually nothing, see this thread:

depends on which side you look at it, the new owner or the one's that lost it.

Agree with len on this one. That's 50 percent of my answer.

The other 50 percent of the time is what jimbo said and not carrying huge amounts of names.

I surly did my mistakes my first year but unlike some here that kept charging and charging on. There cards I paid for all my names in liquid cash. The interest rates will kill you and over leverage yourself.

Yes. Some nice names were dropped. A few top notch names by a member on the board here. I won't comment or say persons name. I saw couple names but decided not to get any at this time.

Just my 2 cents

It is indeed twofold:

It sucks for the person who lost them and its great for the person that acquires them.

We're going to see a lot more premiums drop over the next two years.

Dot TV is a development tld, not a speculative one, and it's a simple case of there being no speculative or immediate to short-term investment value in premium .TV names, particularly domain names $5k and over. A $5k name regged in July last year and renewed in July this year now owes the owner $10,000. In two more years it will owe him $20k. That's an outlay of $20k over a three-year period for what is supposed to have been a $5k name. For anyone to sell a $5k dot TV name in August 2010 for $20k, in order to break even, is wishful thinking.

Apply that reasoning to a $100k premium name and you realise how absurd Verisign's premium pricing scheme is. A $100k name bought in July 1997 has (supposedly) cost the owner $400k by August 2010. How many TV names are going to be worth $400k in two years time?

You can apply that same reasoning to $200 and $500 names. A $200 name regged in July last year will owe the owner $800 in July 2010. I wouldn't like your chances of selling a $200 name for $800 in two years time. From what I'm seeing in this forum, $200 names are now selling for $50 ... or not selling.

Historically, some .com and .net names have exploded in value because (a) people can make lots of money from them because of the traffic volumes they generate; or (b) domainers compete madly for them and drive the prices up to extraordinary highs. Neither of those factors apply to premium TVs.

Makes complete sense ... .TV needs another premium reduction boost or

general values may take a hit ... especially in light of the new TLDs. :]

I've never been a fan of "Premium Registrations" period ... I don't see it as a problem for the extension , Just the setup overall.

you might want to rethink that - most people who made money from .tvs have been from premos - by a long shot!!

Just imagine how much more they'd make at reasonable registration prices/fees vs. premium pricing!

Because they have room to decrease their prices it demonstrates the power

of this extension ... it can potentially becoming the number 2 extension.

indeed, if they got rid of premos altogether, the entire ext would jump 100% overnight

I think some domains would jump 1000% in value overnight. :guilty:

it be ideal to get them rid off the premium right now, but we know this aint gonna happen.
