What exactly is a premium domain? Is it the one which gets huge traffic or is it the one which is said premium by premiumdomains.com?

Thx.

In terms of what is a Premium Name - my clarification would be a name that would fetch on the wholesale market - 1,000 dollars or more. However, the term premium is often thrown around too loosely.

The problem is, there is no way to determine a premium name, unless it is widely acknowledge by other recognized domain investors. So, I think the domainer society as a whole, would be responsible for determining if a domain is premium.

domainspade hit the nail on the head. In general each individual regards a premium domain a unique way... though as a whole if a domain truly is premium most domainers will concur that it is in fact premium if that makes sense. Essentially you can determine yourself whether a domain is premium or not but ask around here and if you get a consensus of "Premium" then you can be assured that it is!!!

Premium is meaningless. It's just an adjective used to try and make a domain name seem important.

1. I agree in general with the last three comments. The term "premium" and other adjectives too are used much too loosely by many domainers on all the forums and domain name sales venues. But one knows quality when they see it. And when they don't. Missapplying a term like "premium" to a domain is kind of like "putting a necktie on a pig". It doesn't work.

2. However, in the case of the Dot-Mobi extension, the word "Premium" does mean something specific: Dot Mobi Premium Names
In connection with the roll-out of the .mobi top level domain, dotMobi (mTLD Ltd.) has chosen to reserve and allocate a number of common words and phrases in an equitable manner other than a traditional โ€œfirst-come, first-servedโ€ basis. This is in line with dotMobiโ€™s contract with ICANN.
Of course there have been many legitimate comments questioning the selection process used to determined some of the 5000+ MTLD premium names. Many real nice generic names were left off their list - a very good thing for those who took the educated risk during landrush. :)

Premium is a subjective term. I agree with DomainSpade, personally anything over a $1,000 is premium to me. Just because I don't have the big money to play at the higher levels. But, in the grand scheme of things, I probably wouldn't consider anything less than $xx,xxx as a premium domain.

At some point, you develop your own ideas of premium and you can usually judge the worth of a domain based on past sales you've had, or by what others are paying for similar domains.

Yup, you're right acc, in this instance premium does have a real meaning.

look into the sale section, its meaning varies alot

I guess it is: "I own it and I am selling it now, so it is premium"

no flame... peace

It's certainly subjective ... ie. for me a $1000 domain is not even close to premium.

For me, premium is something in the $50K+ or so range. But even my own criteria varies depending on the exact domain, TLD, etc.

Ultimately, "premium" has about as much meaning as "best", "great", "premier", etc; it's just marketing fluff jargon until such time a relevant entity (ie. ICANN, FTC, etc) chooses to regulate usage of the word in respect to marketing domains, which is unlikely to ever happen.
