Pointing 1000+ domains to a mini-site/landing page on my server?

Here's the deal. I have 1000+ domains all related to the same generic topic. I get good traffic and type-ins, but the popular parking services are paying me crap compared to what I should be getting.

What I want to do is set-up a mini-site related to this topic, slap some AdSense ads on there, and then point all 1000+ domains to this mini-site. I would also have some dynamic content based on the domain, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this? Normally I have to tell my hosting company to point a new domain to my server. This probably isn't practical for 1000+ domains. Do I need to set-up my own DNS servers? Is there some type of application designed for easily doing this type of thing? Anyone know of any tutorials etc on how to do this? I know I can easily point all the domains to whatever name servers, I'm just not sure the best way to do this...

Your host has set nameservers.

Go to your registrar and point the domains' nameservers to your host, then in your cPanel add the domains to parked domains.

Rackspace doesn't use/offer cPanel, they have their own custom system. To add a domain is like a 4 step process. It would take years to setup 1000 domains that way. I could probably just give them a list of all the domains, but it seems like there must be a better way. I know people with lots of domains do this, where they handle everything on their own and are able to make changes/updates quickly and easily, etc. I just don't know how they are doing it.

if they are registered at Godaddy (and some others), you can point all your DNS to one host with the click of a mouse (I think) then it'd be easy to make a script so your server accepts all of them.

I use Enom a lot. I know if you're domain names are there, you can bulk edit the dns settings, and even use their dns servers to send visitors to forwarded sites.

This might work out for you. As mentioned, GoDaddy among others offer the very same service.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah they are all at GoDaddy. I know I can easily modify the DNS there for the domains. I guess I wasn't clear, sorry. What I'm trying to figure out is how to set things up on my server so that all the domains resolve and get pointed to the right page on my server. I know how to setup virtual hosts in Apache, etc. but I don't think setting up 1000 virtual hosts in Apache is the way to attack this problem. I'm pretty sure there are specialized scripts, etc. for doing what I want to do. Perhaps I'm just not asking the right questions. =)

This doesnt have to be done using a script at all if all your domains are located at godaddy...

Just log into your godaddy account and goto >> myaccount >> manage domain forwarding >> And from there you can redirect all the domains you want to your minisite/parking page, and can ever set different titles/meta keywords if you like (optional).

Thanks for the idea, but that won't work. I need to have the domains resolve on my end, rather than just forward all 1000+ sites to one domain. At least I think I do.

See, what I want to do is be able to have some dynamic content on the site based on the individual domain they accessed, etc. etc. which will help ensure that the most appropriate AdSense ads are displayed at all times. That is the key to high RPMs I think.

Here's an example. Say someone typed in floridamortgage.com. They would end up at a nice little mortgage site with lots of references to Florida, getting a mortgage in Florida, whatever. More importantly, the AdSense ads (at least some of them) will often be specifically for Florida mortgage brokeres, etc. and will get lots of clicks.

I can use a template for the basic site, and the state/city/place etc. name in the site would change based on the domain you arrived from. You can do this and other little things easily and automatically with templates, scripts, etc.

I'm guessing this would probably generate 10x more clicks vs. generic mortgage ads, which would make it worth doing. I think ...

I'm doing this now and this is how it works.

1. Create a virtual host that answers any requests for these names. If you have a spare IP just use that and let it answer any requests. Upload your mini site to this host.

2. Write a script to create the necessary zones for the names and upload the file(s) to your name servers. This is where most people run into trouble. If you have your own name servers this is a piece of cake. If not, you have to work out a way to get all these changes made on someone else's name server. Theoretically possible but I've never had that much time to waste.

3. Bulk change the name servers to use the name servers that are not resolving those names to the ip that's hosting your mini site.

4. Purchase a large bag so you can carry all the cheques you will receive to the bank. Cancel your sedo account

I think, but i am not sure,

you can get someone to write php script, check the $HTTP_REFFERER,

and you could get dynamic content depending on your reffering domain which is one of your 1000+ names.
