Steve made this interesting prediction in another thread; do any of you agree? Does .org have a chance to become a "gentler", "friendlier" .com?

"We aren't a company; we're an organization."

.org already has that branding, to some extent, but it's still not seen as a peer to .com; do any of you see that happening in the next few years?

Simply, No.

Its not a .com. .org is actually the only extension that i see that actually gets used for what its there for. It has a sort of reputable stance in a sense that most non-profit organizations usually go for a .org over a .com. This in return lets everyone else know that there is a cause there.

From a domainers stance this is not good. "non-profit" obvioulsy means they will not pay a penny or will offer a minimal amount for the domain name. The aftermarket is extremely important when it comes to domain names. This is one reason and prolly the main reason .com is king. Everyone wants one and have been proven they help businesses.

.org has its place and its place is a good one. Just do not expect to many sales nor people to go running at it in the future. For god sakes .com is centralized and too popular for it fall in a couple years.

.org has a purpose other than .com but should remain like it is.

One of the LLL.orgs that I sold to an end user was sold at a higher value than the LLL.com would have reached on reseller markets. These non-profit organisations have a lot of money floating around. Unethical? Maybe. Huge opportunity for profit? Definitely.

The difference between a non-profit corporation and a for-profit is that they don't pay dividends. An established method for getting rich from "do good" activity is to set up a non-profit and then abuse the salary/perks/fringe benefits :)

It's not unethical; "non-profit" simply means that all profit is invested back into the business; the owners don't keep it.

Just because a company is "non-profit" doesn't mean they don't make money.

:bingo: That's a great way of summing up how I feel about .orgs and their future. I truly believe we're going to see more and more .orgs used as company/corporate websites, and .coms used more for individual marketing campaigns.

For example, a banking site would use its corporate site as StevechoviaBank.org, while they'd run a television campaign promoting free checking, which would turn users to the memorable CheckOutFreeChecking.com.

Non profit organizations are run pretty much like corporations.
The larger ones have advertising budgets :)

Do any of you see continued growth for .org?

I've seen more and more personal sites and forums using .org; this is probably because the .com was taken and the owners didn't want to use .net.

Is that a story in-and-of itself?

I'm a believer in the .COM, .NET, .ORG, .TV pecking order.

.COM, .NET, .ORG - in that order for me. :)

I personally see good prospects for .org becoming more popular among profit companys, not only non profit ones.

I hold about 300 LLLL.org + 50 generics. I have had several sales of my LLLL.org to endusers for low - mid $xxx this year.

With .com primary occupied and .net having the unconciesness meaning of being second, inferior to .com, the natural choice for companies is .org, which is not being considered inferior to .com but rather being a separate niche for companies and organisations.

P.S.

I also hold hunderds of .com and .net domains as well, please do not consider that I am biased to .org only. I also had several LLLL.net sales and several .com (non LLLL) to endusers as well this year. Just in my opinion .org will become more recognized and will overtake .net at some point.

No -- .net is the alternative for when .com is taken, and visitors know that.

Use of .org is intentional most of the time. It gives the site more credibility (think Wikipedia, folks; they said they'd rather use .org than .com).

I'd love to hear the reasons why anyone thinks .net is better than the fast-growing .org.
