One of my customers who heads a professional website design team had this to say about .Mobi when I asked him for his opinion on the future of .Mobi

"we have strong technical backgrounds and really don't see the top-level domain .mobi as playing a key role in the future... no more than the .biz, .info, etc etc hype turned out to be. Truth is, regardless of the manufacturers leaning on .mobi for mobile devices, they will have to provide .com access equally or they will shut out a lot of the market that will be slow to adapt, just like WAP, therefore devices will most likely default to standardize on regular web browser access to all html, xhtml, rss, etc for all domains. Of course, this is our opinion and nobody knows for sure... we just don't see it happening to a degree that it is significant for our customers, etc..".

I hope he is totally wrong of course.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

They had plenty of time to get their names registered. There are specific rules in place on what code can be used on the .mobi sites and they have good reason for this.

The devises may allow any site code on their systems, but the fact remains that everyone will KNOW that .mobi sites will resolve and have smaller downloads to view. The same can not be said for .com, .net, .biz etc. There are simply too many sites out there. Why play the guessing game when you know .mobi will work?

'You snooze you lose' comes to mind regarding the 'slow adapters'.

On another note..maybe your site design people have no idea how to make a mobile site lol.

I've always found web design companies to be just that. A web design company. IE SEO optimization is submitting the site with submission software/site/script. Hosting a site on the free accounts provided by the registry is just as good as any. Thinks network solutions still manages the DNS, the best place to register names, and the $29 or whatever it is gives them some sort of domain superpowers. Last but not least .com no matter how ugly the domain is, is the only way to go.
