Domain Rating: 56

Backlinks: 2.1K (94% dofollow)

Not justify the price
I have many domains with thousend backlinks & no sale but maybe this price because the new owner want to make profit & sell again to prev owners

This 33k for that domain looks insane for me
The domain was first registered in 2000 and belonged to a non-profit with over 2 million USD per year in revenue. I expect the domain was dropped by mistake. If you see a domain sell for what seems to be an inexplicable amount, you can usually trace it back to a similar story.

The auction participants may have included:

1. The organisation trying to recover their domain
2. People who know the domain is valuable to the organisation and want to sell it back to the organisation
3. People who want the domain for the domain's reputation for SEO
4. Someone nefariously trying to use the domain (e.g: impersonate the organisation using email addresses at the domain)

The dynamics of this type of auction cause inexplicable prices because either the original organisation is willing to pay any amount of money and bids it up, while resellers bid to try and capture the difference between what the organisation can bid and what they're willing to pay.

For example, the organisation might have authorised a representative to bid up to $30k thinking that of course the domain won't go over $30k but then in the last few minutes, it might exceed $30k, and the representative may not have time to get approval to bid higher. Then, after the auction ends, presented with the opportunity to buy the domain from the winner for $40k, or $50k, or $60k, they may well be able to get approval. After all, if they were willing to pay up to $30k, what's $40k or $50k or even $60k?

The risk to this strategy as a reseller is that you might not be bidding against the original owner, and instead be bidding against other resellers pursuing the same strategy. And then you end up winning a $1k domain for $30k and the original owner doesn't want to buy it back. oops. You can derisk the strategy by ensuring you're bidding against the original owner, e.g: maybe they've posted on social media that they know their website is down and they're working to get it back online.

Personally, I think bidders participating in the auction for the domain's reputation and bidders participating for nefarious reasons, are very uncommon when these high prices are involved, and it's almost certainly the original organisation and resellers.

note: If a domain passes the redemption period and goes to auction, and the original owner tries to recover it, GoDaddy (and registrars that use GoDaddy's auctions) will encourage the original owner to participate in the auction.

Whether you or I can justify the price, I'm just pointing out part of the reason the domain sold for so much.

I wouldn't pay $100 for the domain, but then again I've never sold a .org either.

this is the definition of a domain squatter, the worst kind of domainers, they are the reason domainers get a bad reputation. especially in this case, doing it for a non profit org.

Business is business, but I really apreciate effort and all information that provided @s1m that's really nice. I love all stories around specific domains.
