Newly Registered Domain Trends for October 2022

Watch
We analyzed more than 8.4 million newly registered domains (NRDs) added in October 2022 to glean domain intelligence required to make domain name investing decisions more informed and data-based. Among the insights we derived using WhoisXML API’s domain, IP, and DNS data sources are:
  • The domain registration volume has been declining in the past two months.
  • The .com generic top-level domain (gTLD) still accounted for a majority of the domain registrations, although their volume declined.
  • The other popular TLDs in October include .xyz, .org, .net, and .online.
  • Internationalized domain names (IDNs) appeared to remain popular, as evidenced by the recurrence of “xn” among the October NRDs.
  • Other popularly used text strings include “app,” “web,” “shop,” and “market.”

We provided more details below.

Top TLDs of October NRDs

The top 10 TLDs in October remained the same as in September, a combination of major and new gTLDs. .com domains continued to prevail, but we noticed a decline from a 60% share of the NRDs in September to 45% in October.

Aside from the use of universal TLDs in various industries, we continued to detect the popularity of e-commerce-related TLDs like .shop and .store. These TLDs accounted for about 3.3% of total domain registration volume in October.

Common Strings’ Appearance

IDNs continued to be popular just like in September. You can see this in the word cloud below.

We also detected the prevalence of country-based strings, such as “us” and “jp.” Here are some examples of how they were used among the domains.
  • us-olpnu[.]us
  • us-psqusa[.]com
  • and-a-real-estate-in-the-us-ok[.]live
  • go-us-apartments-ok[.]live
  • housekeeping-jobs-in-us-81548[.]com
  • graphic-design-jp-1[.]xyz
  • xn--jp-h45j230c[.]com
  • draincleaning-jp-tok[.]life
  • familydoctor-jp-2022[.]life
  • daesang-jp-store[.]com
The prevalent use of IDNs and country-based strings could mean localized domains are marketable and may be valuable additions to domain portfolios.

As in the previous month, e-commerce-related strings like “shop” and “market” were repeatedly used among the NRDs. Below are a few examples of domains containing the text strings.
  • app-bpsbuol[.]site
  • promevrobudapp[.]com
  • erisxapp[.]com
  • stockbookapps[.]xyz
  • dragonwuapp[.]eu[.]org
  • marketstore[.]vip
  • stenmarkets[.]com
  • mediase-market[.]com
  • tovari-market[.]store
  • fairs-marketing[.]com

  • Lite: The Lite package provides access to a list of NRDs added daily. Its statistics file also reflects the number of domains added for each TLD that day. The package is suitable for analyzing domain registration trends. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
  • Basic: The Basic package contains a list of domains registered and dropped on a given day. Since it contains both newly registered and just expired domains, the package is helpful when analyzing domain movements. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
  • Professional: All data included in the Basic plan can be accessed via the Professional subscription plan. However, the domains are enriched with WHOIS record details, enabling users to see domain ownership and administration information. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
  • Enterprise: Aside from the data included in the Professional package, Enterprise users will also be able to see a list of domains whose WHOIS records were updated in the past 24 hours. Detected changes include registrar information and name server records. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
  • Ultimate: The Ultimate package allows users to access newly discovered domains on top of everything included in the Enterprise subscription plan. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
  • Ultimate_Simple: Users with the Ultimate subscription package have the option to download the ultimate_simple files. The raw text fields in these files, such as rawText, registryDataRawText, and registrantContact.rawText, are empty. You can download data samples here: CSV or JSON.
