Newbie - Unadvertised domain getting offers - How best to sell?

I have a domain, undeveloped, and I'm suddenly getting offers to buy from various people without me doing anything.

This is completely new to me, so I am really a beginner who has just happened to register a good name about 5 years ago. And boy, has this really peaked my interest in this business! I do have a lot of questions, however, on how to smoothly sell this domain.

Should I use an escrow service? If not, what's the best way to complete a sale? How trustworthy are these sites that broker sales? I'm asking a couple thousand for this domain, and so want to be sure everything runs without a hiccup.

I have read some of the posts, and people have mentioned godaddy.com & sedo as auctions -- are these the main ones? I'm thinking I could get the best price by listing it at auction. Especially since people aren't batting an eye at $2000 price range, I do wonder if I'm underpricing. Any thoughts? Is it better to go with the bird in the hand?

Really appreciate any responses, thanks in advance!

I'd try to research why these offers are coming in all of a sudden, then you can better assess where you stand.

Having an intermediary involved in the transaction is best for both parties especially for higher dollar values. Sedo can provide escrow services for domains negotiated outside their marketplace.

Sedo and GoDaddy are both well known, however GoDaddy more so with the end-user/general public, so potential buyers might actually place more trust in making the buy through them if you decide to go the auction route.

And most important, do NOT pay for an appraisal service, these usually are scam buyers!

Yes watch out for scams. Try to figure out who your buyer is and if they condition the sale on you first using an appraisal that they recommend run don't walk from it. It's just a scam to bait you to spend hundreds at their referred site.

If the name is truly 5 yrs old and you have multiple interested parties, then I would say they are probably legit buyers. If it was a recent hand reg, that would be a different story. As RazorNF said, you could always list it on Sedo or Godaddy and direct the interested parties there to bid. If your questioning the value, you can shoot me a PM if you want and I will give you my honest thoughts.

Good Luck
