Ah, dear newbie. This is a broad question, with many insights on the forum. Perhaps it would be wise to read some of the NamePros blogs and posts more extensively before taking the leap.

The wonderful aspect of .com is that the domain prices have held fairly low over many years, compared to many of the new extensions. Verisign has done a good job of that. And the .com will likely always be "king" in terms of extensions.
