Hi everyone, Matt made me sign up (apparently he is the owner of this site...). I'm looking for a new domain name for my in-home personal training company in NJ. Right now, it is: www.bfit-lifestyle.com. I did not know about this "hyphen rule" until I, of course met Matt. So now I am looking for more traffic to my site. My company is called B Fit Lifestyle and that name is taken by some body builder across the country. My business is located in NJ, but as I expand I won't want to be limited to only NJ. So anyway, I need some help and my budget is tiny since I decided to move to Florida for 4 months last fall and didn't work the entire time I was away....

ok thanks!!!

Didn't think you'd actually do it. I'm proud of you for signing up. :red:

I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out a little. I'll give my feedback later tonight.

She doesn't need everyones subpar domain names. :p She needs advice on getting traffic to her business that can result in sales.

Google Adwords, techniques, tips, etc.

Most importantly, she needs direction as she is new to the internet / internet traffic but ambitious to learn.

Actually I found the available domain bFitNJ (dot) com for her a couple weeks ago and she is now using that domain.

So you can all switch to what Matt mentioned, make comments about how to get traffic to her site. Maybe anyone with a fitness site of your own can do a link share with her, for starters? Even if you just have fitness minisites, as long as they're white hat it helps to get some small link exchanges started.

Another suggestion is for OP to write or have written a few more blog posts with relevant articles, and with good search terms as the blog titles.

What's the hyphen rule?

It's a word of mouth business, I'd start with just doing google places and making site look nice and Personal References. People want to think they're being trained by P Diddy or Fifty cent's trainer - I don't know why.

Charge 15% more than everyone else and just claim you're worth it. People base quality on price (not that you aren't good). Also claim you're REALLY busy - you always have to check your schedule (make sure that you imply you have some special clients on retainer not that you're volume dealer).

But seriously. Start with Google places and work from there.

That's some good advice. Bannen that's great that you have found her a domain name. What I meant was, she doesn't want to buy $1,000 domain names via PM because I already talked to her about it and she doesn't want to spend more than $7 on a domain name.

Google Places is a great idea.

And just about any place that would have the business listed with reviews on it. And get friends to write reviews for it.

I'm not an expert on local but this is definitely helpful.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions. This site is great! And yes, I am using bfitnj.com so thank you =)

And Matt is right, I'm new but very eager to learn... I'm taking everyone's advice. I hate blogging but will force myself to create better blog titles, go on adwords, google places, ... anything else?

to create better blog titles
Yes, never underestimate the power of good blog titles to drive traffic to your site. If you want some more in-depth about this, feel free to PM me and I'll walk you through it. But here's a short primer:

1 - Decide what you want your article to be about.
2 - Go to the google keyword tool. Here's the link, hopefully it's okay to post this link in thread:
https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none
3 - On that keyword tool page, down the left hand side you'll see 'match types'; deselect 'broad' and select 'exact'.
4 - Now look at your article again; decide on the main keyword or keyphrase that describes the topic of your article, and type those words/phrases into the keyword tool, one keyword or phrase (with proper spaces between words) per line.
5 - Perform the search. What you'll see is the number of monthly searches that word or phrase gets from google surfers. This shows you that it's a searched term, rather than some random phrase that no one searches for. Try to find a phrase that closely matches the topic of your article, a phrase that has many hundred or even a few thousand monthly searches.
6 - When you find that good keyphrase, use it as the title of your blog article. Use the exact phrase, don't go changing it around. Adding NJ or something on the end is usually ok but it's better to get the exact phrase with no add-on words before or after. If you can find search terms that have to do with your exercise articles AND include NJ or New Jersey in the search, even better.
7 - Not only as the title of your blog, you also want to use that exact phrase 2 - 5 times within your text content in that article, depending on the article's length.
8 - Also, include that exact term in the blog's metadata when you fill out the keywords for that page, and name the blog page the exact same phrase as you're naming the blog article.

The above steps give you a blog article page that has a title the search engines can see easily and which is a term that people actually search for. If your article's search term doesn't have too much competition from other sites using the same phrase, then you have a good chance of your article being put on page 1 of search engines for that phrase.
If your phrase/title for that article has a lot of competition, like tens or hundreds of thousands of searches, then you'll have almost no chance of getting your article high up on the search engines and you'll receive very little search traffic. Ideally you want a phrase that gets 300 - 5000 monthly searches, that is healthy searches but not too heavy in competition from others.

This way, if you have a blog with say 20 articles, and all articles follow the criteria I listed above... maybe half or more of these will eventually wind up on google page 1 for that search term. If each of those phrases gets 1000 monthly searches, you then have a chance of all those searches visiting your blog post, on your website, first when they type in the term.
The mistake many people make is in trying to get traffic to their 'website'; instead, think of trying to get visitors to EACH INDIVIDUAL PAGE. You do this by using cleverly-crafted individual blog pages. When you find a searched-term, without too much competition, and you name your blog article and blog page exactly the same as that term, and use that exact term a few times within your article, as well as using it as one of the keywords in your metadata, this is the groundwork SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that gets visitors to your page... and then they check out the rest of your site, if they like that page.
This optimization can get your blog article to first page, even first spot, on search engines if there isn't too much competition. Patience; can take anywhere from a few days, weeks, or months to get it there. Or never... but do a bunch of pages and many of them will bring you traffic if done properly :)

Hope this isn't confusing; there's more details to watch out for and help, PM if you want more info :)

Okay I know she doesn't need advice for a new domain name but the hyphen is actually a deterrent in domain naming so I acronym it and bflsnj.com is available and through proper development she can market it proactively with all the great advice from all the wonderful and intelligent people here.

Also fitstylenj.com is available and sounds cool to me - which would be a shorter version for "fit styling nj" - good luck.

At the same time you could auto blog articles about fitness while promoting your business.

Sounds promising and best wishes with your business.

Regards,
Tech Rob

Sorry I did not read all the other posts for suggestions and I just did - so disregard my thoughts on domain names - but if you need any help this forum is the best because we care and love what we do!
