I am a lay man not business development expert but I think business investment is very critical decision and needs a careful evaluation.Legality like registered deign ans patents are very important phases of any new business venture.

I agree.

Somewhere between program definition and program design/execution you need to evaluate potential licensing issues (by holders of existing patents) especially with todays current patent trolls (system is broke). Planning should include financial planning and a burn rate.

After patent search you should patent file (if you intend to move forward). A proper search will cost a couple of K and filing will cost another few K (from what I've read you get what you pay for).

You need (a) Lawyer and (b) Money and (c) be setup where you have no personal liability (d) be willing to take risk (e) know when to call it in and (f) don't overpromise and underdeliver.

To give you an idea - research what happened to some good kickstarter projects. Some received too much money, some couldn't deliver, and a lot got killed with handling legalese. I imagine though that there are a lot of good lessons learned in the carnage and in the success stories.

Reach out to Matt/Donny here - you never know, they might give you input and they know crap loads more than me about this.

Kinda lost me with this talk about "patents"...can understand the part about financial planning (budget).

Just look for some guidance from any one having any experience with setting up a basic small "ad network"..something like adsense/adword where I find advertisers that pay a small fee for banner views/clock and I find websmasters that will have these banners on the site..

What I can say that this means a lot of work. Beside Adwords, you also have lot's of networks like no_url_shorteners.
The good news: I will invest some money in this kind of networks.

Thanks aditd for your response! Basically, trying to figure out the basic steps (other than domain name/hosting)..in other words, what did adf(dot)ly do when they first started..

If I were in your shoes I would make sure that the business model comes with something new, unique. There are many ad networks and webmasters will ask why they should join yours and not another one. Did you think about that?

Thanks for your response, webhostingtoplist and have kinda been thinking along those lines. Currently, been jotting down, what I like about one network and what I like about another network. Hoping to make a "hybrid" net work.

I believe this is a good approach. Anyway, good luck with your project!

Unique model, etc.. already been said...

Get your hands on the mind of a good Network manager "or better" that has seen the start up, failures, successes etc..

If he/she is in a position and you can trust them, have them get in as well.

It's not just the knowledge you want from people like this but the Super affilliates that will be driving traffic. Like a good host in the casino that can bring the whales where ever they are..

You can get wannabe affiliates all day.. you can attract advertisers as well... but you'd better deliver performance if you plan on keeping your advertisers..

I do CPA, as well, I do work like graphics, ads, etc for some of these companies. I have a seen more fail that succeed..

Have a look at the ones that are going strong. look as who failed. Having an insider like an NM -- equilivent or better that has been around the block a time or three will know some about the other networks that are kicking a__ or have failed and may be able to offer some insight.

I guess my point is, knowing what not to do is just as, or, more important than knowing what to do.

Kinda rambly, but, maybe a tidbit there to think about.

Regards,
Catfish.

This is main thing in business, you should be able to give something which can't be found with other ad networks..

Starting a business nowadays is not an easy thing to do. Advances in technology totally change the business landscape most especially from the administrative standpoint. Creativity is called for because of the influx of small businesses on the internet.

In starting a business. First you have to risk. Your capital, and your self. You should be brave and no matter what do you have to maintain it.

First off, if building from scratch get with a Developer/Coder and discuss/build a framework first based off of your ideas. Then go from there

To be honest there are already "self contained" prepackaged "ad serving extensions" for sites like the Joomla framework. All you would need to do is develop relationships with the external sites you want your customers adds to be featured on and there you go. All you'll need is your corporate docs to get into business.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Regards,

WPM
