Normally we don't hear much about .no sales since there still are many restrictions on them. (only Norwegian organizations/companies can reg. them).

But it's just been confirmed that the Norwegian domain nav.no has been sold to the Norwegian Government for $711,951 (3,500,000 NOK + 25% tax)
NAV.no was owned by a Norwegian Architect company, but the government is going to "start" a new administration 1 Oct, "ny arbeids- og velferdsforvaltning" (roughly translated to: New Work- and Welfareadministration), that uses NAV as an acronym.
Can't find any english articles about this, but here's one in Norwegian:
Staten betaler 3,5 millioner (+moms) for domenenavnet NAV.no

Another good .no sale has also recently taken place:
$16,265 for smk.no
Statsministerens Kontor kjøper SMK.no for 100.000kr
The buyer is actually the Prime Ministers office, since the name was too close for comfort with their official address smk.dep.no..
Recently a Private/"classified" mail to the Prime Ministers office was actually sent to the smk.no address, so that's the reason why they decided to buy it now.

:sold:

$711,951 - huge number for a single domain. News on which the industry feeds.

That's really shocking, i'm surprised a restricted ccTLD managed to fetch such a hefty sum. I wasn't even aware that the government had any sort of budget for buying domain names, do we have a new end user to target? :P

I'm also surprised they were willing to pay for the smk.no domain instead of just taking it...let alone paying 5 figures for it. And they'd have a perfect case if they used the classified email mistake aswell...strange, but good for the previous owner anyway.

This domain was registered back in the 90's and was used by a company called Skandinavisk Miniatyr Kulelager (SMK). If they wanted the domain they had to buy it. It's no way they would have been able to get the domain in alternative dispute resolution body nor in court.

I've also sold a domain to the Norwegian Government and I know of at least 3 other domain names the Government has bought the last two years...

Socialism at work, what can I say.

It's a good deal for the extension for sure, should add a little value if the government is willing to shell out the equivalent of $700k.
