I tried to register RegulateTHISCOMPANY.com today and NameCheap's order system said the domain is banned from registration.

Nice....

What was the name? I was unable to reproduce the error. See below:

the domain was regulateAPOPULARCOMPANYNAMEHERE.com

of course replace the part after regulate in anycase I talked to NameCheap live support and they questioned why I was gonna register the domain and what my intended use was going to be and now they are manually registering the domain.

I would provide the domain but unfortunately the domain is for a client and I am not sure they would want me to disclose the domain name.

AFAIK Namecheap has been doing this for a while.

If you want to register a FuckCompany.com or CompanySucks.com then hit up support and they can approve it.

Or use a different registrar.

Just curious if anyone knows of a name that will trigger the filter?

There's a long thread at GFY (adult webmasters forum) recently regarding Namecheap suspending a domain due to "moral" reasons after the registrant contacted tech support regarding updating DNS for it. So I'm not surprised to hear Namecheap is word filtering too.

Namecheap's registration terms and conditions appear to be far stricter than that of many other registrars - on a related note, Namecheap, despite being ICANN accredited for many gTLDs, often still processes many registrations, including .com, .net, etc through their eNom reseller account - not sure why, but it surprised me to see that.

Digressed a bit, but point is, in my view, Namecheap seem like amateurs, and are scared of every little thing and hence all their onerous restrictions.

PM sent - as I explain in PM, it's not a clear-cut situation (that is to say, from a layman's view, the website might appear questionable; was not hosted by Namecheap), but the way and why the domain suspension happened further illustrates how Namecheap seems to overreach into matters that should be none of their concern.

Indeed..... I find one thing funny about NameCheap it seems all of their support staff are either Russian or something they all have Russian names..... but NameCheap is based out of California....

Is this even legal?

Hm... This is definitely a first for me! As everyone should know, you should not register TMed domain names, as it can be costly if you get sued, but it also may be possible for some people.

Domagon,

Can you please send me the link as well. I keep my most valuable domains at namecheap and that kind of approach is very worrying.

I see domains as my property. I bought those domains from other people and I transferred them to namecheap from other registrars. My domains are not a service provided by the registrar. I don't accept this kind of approach.

It looks like they're filtering out domains with well-known TMs.

Good for them.

If you have a bonafide use for a TM, then you shouldn't mind calling support and providing company proof OR a basic plan for a CompanyNameSucks kind of site.

I wish all registrars did this.

It would cut down on the cyber- and typosquatting nonsense that gives this industry a bad name.

This is not a good idea and it's short sighted. A term that looks like a unique brand to an English speaker can be a dictionary word or part of a dictionary word in another language. Also there are two word combination that by chance contain brand names if you read them differently.
