Recently, domainers and project owners have started registering Maldivian domain names .mv, given that MV is an excellent abbreviation for the Metaverse. This idea first appeared and was discussed on the threads of this forum

Metaverse ~~Showcase your names and Discussion Thread

MV Domains (Metaverse) - Showcase and Discuss

But due to the fact that these are threads for a broad discussion of domain names for the Metaverse, and the topic of Maldivian domain names has become popular, there is a need to create a separate topic for discussion of .mv domain names.

Managed to get just 1 .mv out of 25-30 submissions -

Landscape

The registry seems shady. All the domains I purchased were showing as available but all were denied. Very easy for .mv to keep what they want now and sell later at a premium. No good imo.

that seems like a bad hit rate.....would you mind sharing what you tried to register? maybe they were truly registered already or reserved by registry

Yeah, 101domain is really bad at showing a name as available and allowing you to go through payment only to tell you a few days later that it's not. One tip is to also check the name via Marcaria first. If Marcaria shows not available, then most likely can't register. Here are some other tips I posted in a different thread

Since *.mv goes through such a weird registration process, these are my observations:

1) Unfortunately, Marcaria and 101Domain seem to have different lists of what names are "unavailable to register", but if you ask, they will provide their list to you. @silentg list is a great start. For 101Domain, this will save you the $19 non-refundable application fee if you know ahead of time you can't register it (even thought their website says it's available and allows you to go through payment)

2) "Unavailable" could mean a) reserved by registry b) someone else owns already c) pending = in process of being registered . Since it can take up to 30 days to register, if a domain is pending by Marcaria customer, then 101domain may not know about the status and think it's available. That could be what's causing inconsistencies.

3) It shouldn't really take 30 days, about 14 days max is what I've seen. Just ask the registry for status update. If they come back and decline your registration, you'll get a refund immediately.

4) There may be some names that were previously unavailable to register that are now available. This is just my guess that perhaps the tld is seeing popularity of .mv registrations and releasing more names.

If there is time, I will make a list of names that Marcaria considers forbidden.
It's several hundred.
But there are exceptions to this rule.
For example, vegas.mv is registered as an exception to this rule.

Marcaria shows that sex.mv is unavailable now. It showed as available a month ago when I tried to register there but was obviously denied.

I also have other registrations there that have been sitting in pending status for over a month.

I got the full refund from 101domains after e-mailing support. To me it's wasting my time and registrar's time dealing with .mv registry. They need to release a full list of reserved names to all the registrars.

You can get registered domain info here: Only shows the DNS and It's better than nothing. So check the keyword you want to register before registering the domain.

agreed as we've all said, the registry needs to improve their process
that whois shows games.mv available, until you clickthrough then it shows unavailable

is there a true .mv whois like icann that shows who registered and when? that would be the best indication if something is really registered or not

that's awefully long, have you pressured the registrar? i opened a ticket and they immediately replied and updated the status.........i've found Marcaria to have much poorer support/response time than 101domain

Is it with Ana? I think she's the sole customer support LOL
It is with Ana. She’s wonderful at communication, I must say. No complaints here.

Ok good luck. I had no status on mine for awhile, so after nagging her, got instant status back that 3/4 were unavailable. Hope it wasn't b/c she was fed up with me. LOL.

I bought one .mv domain now;
lets see how this goes down.

hope the name is still available.

Will get the confirmation soon.

Wish you luck and keep us updated.
Yes, they will gladly take your money, but also good about refunding if not available.

expensive registrations and renewal indeed, these are the only four options we currently have.

Mind sharing what makes Gandi the best?
I've used marcaria and 101domain, for me 101domain has been the easiest so far (best price, best support)

marcaria interface is a joke. look like a website from the nineties, I've used to use years back and still looking the same. I've used gandi before, very professional and transparent and never try to trick you or keep pushing further sales..etc but 101 not used and i will delete my comment about which is the best.

I agree with you about marcaria, they feel ancient, in the interface, support, and registration time.
I won't be using them again.

+1 on 1 domain.

101domain is the best route to go. They got faster support and easy to push domain once you sell. They'll handle everything.

I seem to have managed to create an ecosystem of .mv names that a large company could buy in its entirety to set up a business in the Metaverse.

you have quite an extensive and impressive portfolio.
my top 5 favorites: art, betting , gaming, properties, sports

are you planning to sell or develop?
do you have them listed for sale somewhere or actively marketing them?
because come renewal time they can get expensive to renew

Of course, I would like to develop it myself, but it is difficult.
It's easier to try to sell.
While I put them on the marketplaces Sedo and Dan.
I currently have 251 names like metaverse.* , 22 names like mv.* and 110 names like *.mv .
I didn’t count, but I think that about $50,000 a year should be spent on their renewing.
A difficult but noble mission.
By the way, the first five according to Sedo: art.mv, musiv.mv, club.mv, sports.mv, fitness.mv .
At least in the evaluation as the best name art.mv , you agreed.

If I were you I'd pick out a few of your best and develop simple landing websites and social media presence to showcase potential use and market them. Like Paris Hilton did for paris mv, she used paris.mv (catchy, brandable, easier to remember) as a forwarder for her presence on roblox.

Also for selling, bundle them as package. For example, if you own metaverseart com, mvart com, and art mv, sell them to end user as bundle. Create landing page for one of them, say art mv, and forward the other two domains to it so people know the nice usage of mv.

I believe .mv is a perfect extension for metaverse, just needs more visibility and development to showcase usage.
