The news about the very recent blog entry on mtld.mobi was broken by NP member gen in another thread, but it seems that - however unofficial - mTLD's first comment deserves a separate thread.

So here goes (NB: all emphases added by OP):

=========================================
Android and the Open Handset Alliance

Unless you've been down a mine all week, you'll have seen that Google, one of our investors, announced a new mobile software platform this week. It's called Android and the announcement also revealed the creation of the Open Handset Alliance.

Since we at dotMobi also constitute a mobile consortium of sorts, we thought it would be worthwhile talking about it a little. Certainly there are many facets to making the mobile web experience the success it deserves to be, and so the OHA is very welcome to the party.

The most amazing thing about this announcement was that a 34-company deal was kept so secret. But to be honest, after months of speculation, the rest wasn’t as surprising. The project has even kept the Android name, that of company that Google acquired back in 2005 to start the project.

To dotMobi followers, the big question is how well Android will help the growth and acceptance of the mobile web. Certainly it is set, like the iPhone, to increase the industry buzz and interest around the making the internet a truly mobile medium.

It will be important to see how it will be welcomed by the developers and owners of content, and of course, whether it is set to be a platform that also hits mainstream consumer consciousness, as the iPhone has done.

Whilst OHA plays the "Open" card very strongly, the addition of any new platform into the mobile space creates waves of new diversity, which are not necessarily a good thing in the short term. Nothing becomes de-facto overnight.

Of course, in the longer term, if Android becomes a dominant platform, then diversity diminishes and user experience will increase. (Think of the operating system homogeneity in the PC world, and the relative ease that brings to developers). But that would have to come at the expense of other, dominant market players - many of whom are notably absent from the OHA, and to be fair already have fairly open platforms of their own.

While Google has been able to position itself as a leader in the Internet space – despite what many originally thought was coming to that party a bit too late – there's too much at stake in the mobile world for ubiquity and uniformity to happen overnight, or even smoothly. This dynamic of device diversity is a very particular curse for the mobile space. And, incidentally, why we've been working so hard on mitigating it with our device database initiatives.

So the announcement was interesting and positive. We await further progress with great excitement.

That was my first reaction too, so I had to read it again.

There are obviously many strands there, but my first take is they are saying something along these lines:

"Long term positive if OHA becomes dominant, but that can't and won't happen 'smoothly' - so short term challenges for anyone trying to design a mobile website that's user-friendly...

...Which is where our device-database initiative comes in..."

Or something like that, what do I know...

I'm with you on that one. I think all they are saying is that awareness, no
matter what platform, is good for the mobile web (.mobi included). But, don't
expect any one platform to dominate the field, especially in the short term.

...and it may be that the key here is the word 'smoothly'.

IF this is saying that Nokia and/or others are preparing to battle Google on all fronts - including operating system and standards - for the dominance that most agree will have to come eventually, then we are looking at an even longer period where developers will not have a single dominant platform to design for.

At the same time the increased developer awareness triggered by the very existence of OHA - with Google in it - will inevitably lead to more mobile content being generated.

Will all that new content be kept off-line waiting for the dominant standard to emerge, or will a lot of it have to be squeezed into the pathetic hardware that we have right now (iPhone and much worse)?

Thankfully there is a solution: the plucky little .mobi

MAINSTREAM CONSUMER CONSCIOUSNESS...Yes... Very important..When will this apply to .Mobi?

Content is key in this situation. Is there enough content available to take
this to the masses? Right now I'd say yes :imho: Everyone around here
sees big players deving their mobis, now let's start seeing the ads on tv!

And let's not forget all the developed sites from members here and other
forums alike :)

Good question; if I offer my best guess it will inevitably sound like wishful thinking - so I won't.

But what the quote you reference may be saying is that - while they'll go with whoever looks most likely to win at any point - right now they don't fancy Google's chances that much.

I read this as android might be good for .mobi or it might not.

If it sounds like mTLD are not best pleased that Google hadn't told them in advance, we need to bear in mind that one thing Google always like to do is surprise the market.

They made very senior people in their partner organizations sign formal non-disclosure agreements - allegedly just to attend a meeting a few days before recent news was officially released.

So mTLD shouldn't take it personally, and they probably don't - it just sounds that way if you want to look for hidden negatives.

I hope One thing You all keep in Mind is that .MOBI is the Designated ICANN approved NameSpace for Mobile Devices.

DomainName/CompanyName.com wasn't broken or made regardless of Microsoft or Apple's OS, Browser Types or Connection Speeds either with the "Snails Pace Gerbil Run Modems" We all were forced to use (initially) until DSL and Cable was fortunately made available, which really opened everything up for the current Internet platform that we have in use today.

The Mobile Internet is still in it's beggining stages, the NameSpace has already been assigned & approved by ICANN. (.MOBI)

I'm a New Startup Company with (200+) DomainName.mobi's along with some .com counterparts. In early 2008 I will be releasing 1-10 perhaps more within the first two quarters of next year. Latter part of 2008 into 2009 hopefully will be releasing even more.

So along with the understanding that the Consumer/User will need to be patient with the releasing of these Company Owned .MOBI's and any Marketing that goes along with them, All and any Cellphone OS, Browser Types, Connection Speeds and or Platforms that are developed and created in the meantime, really is there to benefit and give the Consumer/User the same options and choices for the Mobile Internet just like the streamlined Internet we have today for the PC.

Microsoft, Apple, Google, Nokia etc. only wish to put out products, just as they did for the PC Internet NameSpace (.COM) that will help steer more Customers to their Products and Services in this New and Potentially Extremely Large, World Wide, Mobile Internet.

With this New ICANN approved (.MOBI) Mobile NameSpace It is Essentially Creating an Entirely New Internet Market that is currently being developed right before the Eyes of all those who now know of it, and all those who are on the verge of knowing it.
