Spark.

Here's why this is good...

1) MobiTV branding. Even though this isn't .MOBI, it is further reinforcing "MOBI" as a keyword for MOBILE.

2) Consumables that reinforce content and time beyond email and phone services will only hasten the coming mobile web surfing revolution.

Don't underestimate the power of $100,000,000.

MOBI word...

Yeah... its really true that branding the word "MOBI" to mobile users is as important as branding the MOBI ext itself. People will familiar with this MOBI word, and it would be some point of advantage for us.. nice article 'Jeremy....

They are using .COM and you think this is good for

.mobi ? I wouldn't underestimate the power of .com.

but they took the time to register their trademark.....and they will use it along with Adobe & the thousands of other Fortune 1000 companies.....remember, .mobi is very new, but soon it will be very popular, as the points of light -- the sparks -- continue to emerge....

Mobi as an abbreviation of Mobile, marketed to consumers is a good thing!

I agree with this logic ... it could be argued that the m

in .com will remind people of .mobi.

What makes you say they will use it?

MobiTV (along with many other companies using "mobi" as a prefix) have been around for a long time already. Companies often register their name in extensions they never intend to "use", only to protect their brand or trademark.

Though this is somewhat true in some cases, why would MobiTv, or any other company, only reg 'certain extensions' and not all if they were 'protecting their brand'??

..why use now what people aren't yet familiar with? Why don't cable TV companies only have HD signals for cable instead of standard and HD..?? Because not everyone has a HD TV! In 7 years or so, why still have the standard signal if everyone is using HD! It's all in the timing!

MOBI sounds cute and hip - appealing to youngsters is the name of the game.

The internet is really all about interconnected communications - and the shift is towards each individual having a direct immediate connection to the great web... which implies mobile - combining phone, internet, av media, camera, gps locator, and eventually virtual passport, wallet and keys - it makes sense, it is inevitable.

If this all-in-one device ends up being known globally as the "MOBI" then what do you think .mobi names will be worth?

Let the branding begin!

From the start I thought "mobi" branding was going
to be big as the TLD itself. I invested in some branding
domains, both dotcom and dotmobi. If the new term for
most any mobile device becomes "mobi" I thought it might
be wise to buy a few.

Here is my mobi branding junk.

911mobi.com
911mobi.mobi
mobi911.mobi
mobi911.net
mobicrazy.mobi
mobifaq.mobi
mobified.mobi
mobifix.mobi
mobifreeware.com
mobifreeware.mobi
mobigadgets.com
mobigameware.com
mobipad.mobi
mobipayg.com
mobiprepay.com
mobiville.mobi
mobiville.net
mobize.mobi
mobized.com
mobized.mobi
paygmobi.com
prepaymobi.com

These are likely trash and I should have
bought more LLL or NNN. It's one of those
"what was I thinking" moments (or perhaps mobiments lol)
But, if "mobi" becomes a new hip term, perhaps I'll
get the reg fee back.

Here is a interesting example of "mobi" branding.

I don't think you're too far off on your theory. At first I thought having mobi in a domain name was redundant. But after doing some research, and noticing how many names starting with 'mobi' were preregged, and even sunshined regged, I saw the 'mobi branding' idea as very forseeable in the near future. So I regged some too. Some countries already use the term to describe their mobile phones etc. And if phones do either default, or have a set 'mobi' key, then it seems even more plausible. Only time will tell, but should 'mobi' become a 'hip' generic term, then some of these type of names just might pan out. However I don't think it'll be feasible with all names, just those that go with the mobile experience; like MobiPay, MobiTV, MobiDevices etc. IMO.

Hi Hawkeye,

Will there be a "mobi" key on new mobile devices in the
near future? If there is such a key I think .mobi will
indeed gain acceptance by mere default use. If anyone
knows of some online aritcles about such a
hardware use of a .mobi key, please post a link.

One more item: perhaps all mobile device browsers should have
dot mobi set as the defalt TLD for addresses sent without
a specific TLD. After all it's the only 100% safe TLD for
a mobile device browser. It's the bigwigs in industry that will
decide such things for us and I sure would like some
interesting reading on the subject.

Thank You for your reply.

Don_OKC: this is what many of us would love, but until now, I have not seen any fact saying this could or could not happen...only speculation in one sense or the other...

I just took one with mobi in it: infomobi.mobi (mobiinfo.mobi was on the reserved list and I thought generally in English speaking countries it would be more natural to place mobi before, but for other countries it would be the opposite)...Let's see...

Hi Fautebol,

That was my thinking with registering "mobifaq.mobi"
"mobi" seems to work great as a prefix and not all that
bad as a suffix. If any major marketing campaigns start
branding "mobi". We have gold!

Good Luck
