The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Hefty relative to what???

Just hefty :)

Considering that all the top combinations are taken, paying 1300 for a mediocre low-liquidity name is not the best option for me. Actually, can reg for 1090 on Porkbun but it doesn't change the situation dramatically.
Yes, we see end-user LLL.co sales on Namebio but a) there are not so many b) these names are mostly taken in 150-200+ extensions c) for lower quality names sale prices are not that high to justify the investment. But that's how I see it. For some people 1.5X - 2X is a good enough result, and there is nothing wrong about it. And sure these .co may appreciate greatly over time but that's speculation.

They are not all taken (LLL.co's). They once were. However in september 2018 the co-regstry have changed a policy.
It is so that the new policy is as follows : the registry charges from then on mostly 1.250 USD or 1.500 USD (mostly) and (for a certain amount (this is only for some : not enormously much ones) of LLL .CO's 3.500 USD or more for SOME special LLL.CO's (not all though) LLL-domains that drop AND BECOME AVAILALBLE to REGISTER. HOWEVER FOR THESE DOMAINS renew (or transfer to someone who buys the domain from somebody) is ONLY the NORMAL COST, so the normal renewalprice for a.co-domain (which is between 20 USD/year-35 USD depending from registrar to registrar).
Some LLL.CO's drop and are reregisterrable at normal pricing, but that nearly never happens, because they're sold in Aftermarketuactions, or backorderred.

It is so that lots of people AS CONSEQUENCE of that new policy, and also because of high DEMAND for LLL.CO's if the corresponding LLL.COM is occupied or people ask 50.000- 500.000 for the LLL.COM, DON'T let their LLL.co-domains drop, but renew them at normal pricing. (letting them drop gives the risk that once the domain comes available again, immediately costs 1.250 USD - 3.500 USD registryfee for the 1st year new year, so people who have LLL.CO's don't drop them easily for the moment).
.
Another thing changed also at 1 september 2018 with the LLLL-domains that drop : The price in case of drop for such a domain; changes to around 125 USD (instead of low pricing), but renewal afterwards costs normal renewalprice.(20-35 USD)

For 5L-domains registrations is as you see at registrars or a promotionprice; renewal is again between 20-35 USD depending from registrar to registrar.

It is also the case that some interesting domains (not LLL or LLLL) costing 150 USD when they drop to reregister (again afterwards renewable at normal pricing 20-35 USD)..

And this is why .CO will fail miserably over the long-term. Price instability scares everyone from companies to investors and will drive them back to the comfort of .COM.

These little tin-pot tyrants always get greedy and then cook the golden goose. You can time your watch by it.

co went prem on all 3l.co names in 2019

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I haven't stumbled across any that have been owned by the registry. A few that have been developed (CMI.co is one), and most that seem to be owned by investors.

Not that I would have dropped any anyway — but I'm definitely not doing it if they're just going to end up in the hands of the registry.

I have 10 LLL and 2 NNN.

Have a look at the lll.co sales on dnjournal today, all very good.
Too many on here that want to pay chicken feed for premium lll.co

there is nothing i'm seeing that makes me thing this is even close to possible(outside of domains becoming extinct)

The .CO sales we see being reported dispute this. Whether its the knock off-.com effect thats helped .CO, you cant deny .CO has taken off and wont be coming back anytime soon...the sales show activity and demand. there arent enough quality .COMs at .CO's "alternative" price point for end users. If .com was satisfying end users, then .CO should have flopped by now, but it hasnt. i dont invest in .CO btw, it had high and unpredictable renewal fees imo thats why i stayed away.

These little tin-pot tyrants always get greedy and then cook the golden goose.
market reality doesnt support this imo. if you over leverage the market you go broke, but they arent broke yet..
