List of FREE Stock Photo Websites

At one time or another, you will be looking for images to use on your website and a quick google images search just won't do the trick. Here is a list of websites that offer free stock photos, which are images you can use for free without running into copyright issues.

FYI: There is a difference between FREE stock photos and ROYALTY-FREE stock photos. FREE stock photos are free, without charge, for you to use however you want. ROYALTY-FREE stock photos often require an initial payment, but can be used without further payment for commercial purposes (some may have a limit of how many times it can be used). The list of links below should be, for the majority, completely FREE stock photos. There should be absolutely no Rights-Managed ("licensed images") in the list below. Rights-Managed images require you to pay for every time you use it or reproduce it, so if you find one in the list below please let me know.

Well, this thread is mainly for free stock photos... by adding fonts and the like (for which I have a TON of websites), it just changes the purpose of this thread. Perhaps I'll start a free fonts thread or free resources (I will have this section on my website).

For fonts, there's also www.dafont.com, which is better than Betterfonts.com from what I've experienced.

FYI, I have donated a stick to this thread because in my opinion it is one of the best threads on NamePros. It's quite a daunting task to get images for sites without stepping on any toes or unwittingly infringing on copyrights ("but I got it from Google Images!" doesn't work!). Mods have permanently stickied one of my threads in the Domain Newbies area about typos, and I hope they permanently sticky this thread as well as it's a vital resource to designers. Thank you to the thread starter JYM (fellow San Diegan...we rule!), and I hope this helps others as much as it will help me right now...making a mortgage site for a buddy of mine!

Thanks a lot Steve! I have always used a few select free stock photo sites, but one day when I was searching for a particular image, I could not find one I liked. Thus, I began searching for more stock photo sites, in hopes that I would find the ideal image I was looking for. Although I did not find that image (and stopped looking), I made a big list of good websites and thought I would share it

I have updated with four more free stock photo sites. Although none of them can compare with sxc.hu in terms of the number of photos, some just might have the image you are looking for.

FREE stock photos are free, without charge, for you to use however you want.

That is not necessarily right, what you are referring to are free royalty-free images. Free images may pose certain restrictions of some kind, such as having to place a link-back to the photographer’s website.

Thank you! It was a pain finding one before. Some how I found out about SXC and that site is awesome. Although it is a bit slow and performs better in IE6, I still love it.
