-.kg , yes!: hyphen (dot) Kg - The shortest Domain in the World?

I have registered that domain after it was dropped about 1 month ago. Some Austrian Guy owned this domain for a couple years (from June 2001) and then he dropped it, I have found quite a bit of referrence (mostly in german) that this domain was active at some point and many called it the shortest domain in the world even the guiness book was mentioned in one article I read, lol maybe not the shortest domain in the world but a weird one for sure, and I am aware of one more domain of this type which is registerred in kazachstan since a long time: -.kz...

Now, the problem part:

1. the domains nameserver are not resolving

I have my NS pointing to Noomle and got it in my control panel too but the site is not resolving, it works fine for another .kg domain I own so my guess is that a hyphen only domain can not be recognized but according to my research it must have worked at some point in the past.
Also I have contacted my registrar regarding this and they told me it will not work in most countries but in some (??) http://www.-.kg - Can you see something from your location?

2. hyphen only domains are not allowed

This is taken from the Regulations for Registration of a .KG Domain Name :

A domain name must consist of one and more than one symbols, begin and end with a letter of Roman alphabet or a digit. Letters, digits or a hyphen can be used as intermediate symbols.

But my .kg registrar in Kirgistan has told me that they allow me to keep the domain but if my attemps to develop fail, I have the option to ask for a refund, totally my choice...

Do you see any solution for my first problem? And if the problem can be solved somehow (obviously a domain that can not be developed is sort of worthless - maybe a collectors item at best) and I sell the domain in the future do you think the new owner is at a big risk of loosing that domain someday?

LOL, undeveloped for sure, but my development idea will blow your mind ( Top Secret :D)... it's the perfect domain for this idea :p ... -.kz would not work only -.kg :D

Hi Toni, not resolving here. I'm curious if you have tried using an alternate host and nameserver to see if the domain will resolve?

Yes I have tried to add it into my Hostgator Hosting account and also into my Godaddy Hosting account but when I try to add -.kg it says: -.kg is an invalid domain (and they are sort of right :p) , no problem with adding it at Noomle...

Hmmm I could try to talk to Hostgator and Godaddy support if they could add the domain manually...

Good luck but as you have visited the idn forum you would know there are equally short domains out there.

I have four one character domains that are idns from differnet alphabets

The hyphen mark will not resolve on it's own, but
if you forward to a text or number-based domain then
then it should work that way.

Essentially, this is an IDN, and it will have a puny
-code coding associated with it. The hyphen mark is
on pretty much everyone's keyboard - good find.

@jennifer: good question, that could solve my problem, unfortunately I don't have total DNS control only NS change is available, I have now emailed them and am crossing my fingers...

I dont think it is possible. The problem lies in the root server for the whole TLD. Back in the day belizenic had teamed up with a service to allow such sort of weird registrations: IE ( $.bz) and set their nameservers up in the root so it would resolve. Naturally ICANN wasnt too happy and it got eventually shut down.

@Sam: Thanks for this info, this is new to me... Sounds like this story will not have a happy end, -.kg will end up as a collectors item only , probably the reason why the previous owner decided to drop it because his website no longer worked.

the bunch over at idn forums are quite a crazy self contained unit that seems to want to attack anything that does not fit their perceived parrameters of the idn world, hacks are a hard one though and considering it is accented and a .tel you were never gonna win them over ......some would say it was a suicide mission from the start !!

lol, yeah I feel quite un-welcome every time I post over there - really not the way you build a good and strong community, my friend Allen runs IDN Club IMO the friendlier place to discuss IDNs, only downside - too much chinese characters for my eyes :D , I agree that all odds (tunnel vision domainer guidelines) speak against this reg but I believe in it and I think it's sellable, let's see ..

Toni:

If you want to resolve that domain, you can try to setup your own DNS server. I don't now if there is any software that resolve hyphens but you can install some open source software and modify it yourself.
