discuss Just laid off - Thinking about selling names for a living

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
3rd layoff in 7 years - sick of working for other people. I have had some success doing this - contemplating doing this for a living. May just start and see how I do for a while job hunting. Ugh

Didn't you just flip a high 4 figure purchase for 6 figures? I would call that a 1 year vacation to think your future thru. To make it in domaining day in, and day out, right now you need a large aged portfolio, sometimes even the best names take years to sell, so monthly income will not be stable unless your portfolio is vast, or you hustle in, and out everyday.
I just sold a name 2 weeks ago for 150K - I am in the process of an article with domain Shane -
I used that money to pay off years worth of debt (credit cards - loans - camper - just normal life stuff) and put some away. Thank God for domain names and that sale!
I am looking for an amazing name to sell and now I have time to really concentrate on selling a few great names I have.
Financially, I am set for a while but I have to be careful with my money.
I have a great degree and work background, I will find something if I want to find something - I want to work for myself but I cant risk the money (my wife would kill me)
Anyway, thank you all for the kind words and advice - life moves on......

Have been in IT for 33 years working on everything from A-Z.
What you can do now is while working on Domain Names you can open an IT Tech services for your community at the same time to make sure you have steady income.

Depending on what your skills are in IT there are a lot of things that you can do yourself.
PM me if you need help.

Good luck!

Life goes on my brother. You are not a newbie in domaining business, so nothing to worry about. If you have sold a name for 150k in the past, then you already have a job.

That sucks brother. At least you've got domains as a fallback, whereas most people once laid off they're in real trouble. Some great advice on here, and wish you the best.

Congrats on the excellent sale, your wife getting mixed up in your decision to start a business is a huge potential problem, on many leveIs and I know from first hand experience. The time is hard to balance. I won't say anything else as you realize that, and wish you the best. Good luck.

I've been there too many times, but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason!

Stand tall and keep the faith!!!

Not sure how you are filing taxes at the end of year, but be careful if you are receiving unemployment pay, I had a friend who did just a small gig assistant coach for a college basketball team, that paid little just enough for expenses, but being he was paid with a 1099 (independent Contractor business) unemployment went after him for 2 years back unemployment pay. They are going after him for it all, because they said he was operating a business and wasn't eligible to collect unemployment. We also live in NY, I would look into it if you are collecting unemployment, that was years ago maybe things have changed though. One avenue that might work is if your wife could claim the sale being property is owned by both jointly, I am not an accountant just giving a heads up.

With industry turnover in the 1% range and most end users viewing domains as a $XX expenditure, I believe one could say that website development and online marketing skills are probably better compensated than the typical domain portfolio.

Beware of this guy. He will agree to buy your domain name hold it in escrow and try to sell it and when it doesnt sell he will back out. I will be posting a thread about this.

Bitter man who has been following me around harassing me and I'm not sure why? - @Eric Lyon - Seriously - can you shut this guy up? I have no idea what his problem is, I have never screwed anyone on this board.
This guy hired a broker to hide his identity so I would buy his name. He knew that I would bever buy from him if I knew who he was.

Your walkomg around like your a hero because you made this 150k and you left me hanging and couldnt pay for a 9k domain even if a broker was used you backed out of the deal. You LYING if you say No tell the truth. I didnt hire a broker lol ED is my friend he pitched you the name. You agreed to buy it after that i noticed who you where but becuase you agree to buy it I didnt back out.

If you want to keep lying I will start n

@uglydork I'm sorry to hear you lost your job. Keep your options open and listen to your instincts about your next move.

You have always been stand up with me and even gave me an amazing deal once. Not sure what may have happened with @imadoer but I can only speak of my experience with you and it has always been really good.

Congrats on the sale. Sometimes we sell too soon and leave money on the table. You kept going thank goodness and ended up with a great result.

Hope to do business again sometime soon.

@imadoer I have had deals cancel too...it sucks. Not sure it matters about preshopping the name. Sorry the sale didn't go through. Like they say, it's not done until it's done. I don't know if there's more but what has been said sounds like everyday business.

In my field of real estate, cancellations happen in escrow all the time.

It's clear you are bitter over it. Hopefully you will let it go. There are many more deals to come and our community is too small to cut off ties.

Congrats on the sale - we old IT guys seem to graduate to the domain name biz. I started on an IBM 421, and I wrote an operating system for a micro-computer before Bill Gates, but he made a bit more out of his system than I did. :)

Bitter isnt the word. I have done my best to honor every agreement I make. I agree to sell names at times. then get a way higher offer largest was 7k more the agreed opon price. But i did the right thing and honored my agreement. So its no big deal.to anyone. Next time someone wants to deal with me i can just back out and its ok.. fine this is the new code. Also i never tired to sell someone elses domain with out permission but I guess this is all ok cause he made a 150k sale. And thats all anyone cares about

I know you are a man of honor. I just see miscommunication leading to problems that could maybe be resolved without losing relationships.

Perhaps you could share privately your feelings. I have seen several disputes or differences of opinion be made public only to have both parties regret it at the end. Wishing they had not said things in public.

I don't want you to make the same mistake. Imagine you started deal with someone and something went wrong, then the guy starts blasting you publicly. You know you are a good person, but the other guy just sees his side and continues to attack you and you have to defend your honor when you know you are an honorable person. That's all I'm saying.

But heres the thing. There was no miscommunication. He agreed to buy the name. He tried to sell the domain and he didnt own it and this isnt right. But he made a 150k sale. Hes a hero. Lol

Making it public is a good thing so people can see the truth. So they know who they are dealing with.

Some of my very best business relationships started out rough as heck. Don't know why, but even one of my very best friendships started out years ago when I was hired as a turn around specialist. I took over the marketing, graphics, writers, programmers and worked directly with the board. In my very first meeting with the team I was to manage, a long time employee has a outburst (because she had been there a long time and here comes this new guy to shake things up.) Anyway, what started as a nightmare (and it was in public), ended up being one of my best business connections in the world. She is an amazing friend.

I have made a ton of money and made a ton of good relationships with patience and seeing over the clouds.

Okay friend...I guess each person has their opinion of how to handle a sensitive situation.
