Joining Snapnames auctions halfway?

I didn't think this was possible, and I'm a little peeved I didn't realise it was earlier.

I was bidding on a name on snapnames (feminist.info) and was the high bidder. There was definitely only one other person who put in the $60 bid necessary to begin with, and right up until about two hours before the auction end (I checked).

Now I come back online and see I have been outbid by someone who was not on the l;ist. Originally there was me and "halvares". Now that the auction has ended, I have lost the name to fatjobbie, yet there are also several others also listed, and it is listing them as having put in a bid on Dec 2nd.

How is this possible? Can you join the $60 auctions part way through? I was under the impression you could not.

So you can join them even if they are already underway? Is this just done automatically if you put a name on backorder which has already started, or do you have to make a special request?

You can only join in on the public auctions.

This is off the snapnames website

SnapNames features two types of auctions: "Public" and "Private."
Public auctions feature a low minimum bid and can be joined by anyone, at any time prior to close.

Private auctions can be joined by anyone, but are limited to those that place bids before the start of an auction. These auctions generally require a higher minimum bid in exchange for the opportunity to limit competition from outsiders once the auction starts.

Both auction formats operate under essentially the same rules, with the following key differences:
When one or more bids are received before an auction starts, that domain is reserved for private auction.

If only one customer has bid in advance for a selected domain name, the auction is cancelled and that customer automatically wins the domain name for the minimum bid price listed in search results.

The search results page lists all domain names currently in public auction, as well as all domain names that can be reserved for private auction (i.e. an auction has not yet started). Domain names in private auction are not visible in search results.

Thanks Gazzip, i will take a screenshot in future as I want to check this out now. The auction I was on was a $60 pre-drop auction...

Since all but total junk names are now minimum $49 bid they ought to remove that from their terms.

From what I see you cannot join actual drops once they start. As for these private one's who knows, never been in one.

I doubt that JP :) - When they say "private" they just mean that it becomes private once it has dropped, just like the 2 letter.org one.

"Private Auction" sounds posh though eh :hehe:

Sorry JP :hehe:

Private Auctions - Don't Get Locked Out!

The most valuable domains are offered to advance bidders only. Secure your chance to win by placing your bid before an auction is scheduled to start.

ie: Private Auctions are available to everyone that has placed a backorder before the name has dropped, they cannot be joined after they have started.

The less than $60 ones are Public - as in ... can be joined at any time.

Saying that - it appears they have bent some of their rules before :hehe:

ie: when they let Buydomains list a pile of their names to sell at auction, I have only seen it done once though.

They listed loads of Buydomains three letter .coms with very high starting bid prices.

The owner of snapnames did say he was considering introducing a similar thing to the general public which would be great - no idea if and when it will happen though.

I really hope they go for it though :)
