I've registered a domain name... how long to show up in Whois?

Hi all.

I have just registered a new domain name with namecheap (it is a .com name).

Can someone please tell me exactly how long it will be until all of the whois info gets updated? At the moment, checking on whois.com it comes up with "no details".

Does this mean that it's just pushing through and I don't yet officially own the name? I don't want to get it appraised until I am positive that no one else can swipe it?

It's yours... the WHOIS info on NameCheap (I think it has one...) should update fairly instantly... make sure your cache is clear too ;)

NameCheap is a reseller of eNom. Try checking eNom's WHOIS:
http://www.enom.com/domains/whois.asp

Also, you should be able to visit your domain and have it resolve to a live webpage. That will confirm that you have the domain.

Excellent!

Thank you so much for the fast reply. I tried typing in the domain name directly as a url, and it went to a live parking page. Then I did a whois, and my details come up, so its all good.

Thanks again

Not necessarily. It does take time for a domain to resolve to the DNS of your ISP.

Most registrars are instant with the registry; Throughout my experience, I have found GoDaddy to be a little slow (well, the slowest, taking up to 2 minutes - In my experience, of course).

Well, I hope that helps you out :)

when reggin a domain,

the registar's own whois system should pick it up instantly

other whois may take a few hours to update

With .NET/.COM the registrants information is stored with the registrar. This is called having a "thin" registry. The best place for correct WHOIS on a name registered at eNom is at eNom's WHOIS, a Network Solutions domain at NetworkSolutions.com, etc. You can check the registry's whois at www.internic.net (run by Verisign) but the registrant's details will not be listed.

.ORG, .INFO, .US on the other hand have a central place to check WHOIS info (the respective registry). These are "thick" registries.
