Dropped the ball with this....

Did not realise my Afternic username was publicly on show until I read the below on Network Solutions

"Only your Afternic user name will be listed with your domain"

I am currently using MrAcidic which is not professional at all, have sent an email to service @ afternic.com and told them my current username and a list of 5 alternatives (in preferential order)

If you need to change your username make sure to send the email from the one they have on file.....

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Where exactly is it being shown? I believe one can configure their privacy settings to avoid it.

thanks @Don Gondon

Went to Afternic settings and saw that the below is hidden

  • My Avatar
  • "Share Profile" Social Media Links
  • My Username

I think for transparency sake I will get a new username and upload a picture.......

To get a new username, you must create a new account. I enquired about this in past and i doubt it has changed because nothing else changes at afternic

Not sure if it's shown anywhere during the direct transaction, certainly it's not shown on the parking page (on ns3/ns4). But at the very least it's used in the url of your public portfolio, e.g. mine is: https://www.afternic.com/varia
definitely worth keeping it professional (if I can change it that is) then if you want to share or showcase your portfolio

You can hide your portfolio and username from public view, but I think that is mutually inclusive.
I imagine your name will show when a transaction is finalised.

What I am keen to know is when I make an offer, does the other party see my username if I have hidden it as above?

good question......hopefully someone can answer that

Personally I do not want to be in private mode, I have some domains that fall under one category (Defi for example) so keeping my portfolio & username public keeps these names in full view and shows a selection of names for that category for any potential end user......

Always been private, so I would love to have those questions answered.

I tried to change my afternic username without luck. Afternic support said that is not allowed.

Fair enough. I imagine that limits shady operators to some extent.

EDIT: I cannot recall when I signed up at Afternic, if it was made clear that you are stuck with the username you choose.
Anybody?

My username was created and assigned to me by an Afternic broker.

@NickB

I made an offer the other day, and checked that offer today in the Afternic panel and can confirm that the offer was made via a different username to mine.

Nice one.....

Also got an email from Afternic and @MasterOfMyDomains was right (didn't doubt he was!)

"Thank you for contacting Afternic Support.

Unfortunately, there is not a process to change an Afternic User Name. If you must still have a new User Name, then please proceed instead by creating a new account with your desired User Name.

If you would like this same email on the next account that you make, then we will need to officially close this account first. For us to do so, we need to receive the request to close the account from the email address that is on file. Once that is processed, you would be able to create the new account with your new User Name and same email address.

We hope that your future Auctions endeavors are successful. Please contact us again if we can be of further assistance."

username is important?

Yes, it is half the info needed to hack your Afternic account and change prices - so if you have Fast Transfer enabled, someone can set the price of your domain as low as they like, say $20, then they or their accomplice buy it and get it at once, probably no way to get it back. They could also change your payment details so they receive your afternic payments.

There is no 2FA at Afternic so once you know a username you just need to find a password to get in.

Exposing usernames at Afternic also came up in Afternic bugs thread at https://www.namepros.com/threads/problems-bugs-and-fixes-at-afternic-report-problems-here.1006373/

I have never been convinced that TFA is all that safe in certain circumstances.
eg: Phone numbers can be ported in some dodgy situations. What if your phone is stolen and not locked?
I wont go into specifics, but be wary what you click on in SMS, emails, and other platforms.

Actually, I emailed afternic and they told me there is no option to change username at present.

Afternic's email response attached.

I don't even see a way to add a picture anymore.

I don't see why it would be important people are going to by based on the domain not on your afternic portfolio name

Doesn't appear to be, no. Shame we can't alter user name or make an attractive profile. After all, we are earning Afternic money with our domain sales. Seems it is in their best interest to allow some creativity with profile design. Nothing fancy, maybe just a choice of background and an avatar.
