Is there a limitation on number of files in base directory?

Is there a limitation on number of files or folders in base directory of a web site? In other words, If I had a domain "TopSpeedHost.com", can I have thousands of directories like "TopSpeedHost.com/folder1", "TopSpeedHost.com/folder2", etc? I realize there is a limit of megs or gigs... but is there a limit to the actual number of files/directories? Linux-based.

AFAIK, there are no limits on the number of directories you can create.

There's no limit i guess.. I've had once with around 25k directories.
