Is it a good idea to call an end-user after you made a counter offer?

This is the scenario...

End-user makes a $2500 offer.
You countered with $4000
He has not responded for 5 days.
Would you give him a call?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

To me as a possible enduser it would reek of desperation and would automatically make me think i am in the stronger position, finding even less reason to agree to that counteroffer or even making a higher offer.

Imho following up on an end user after several days with a short email asking about the current thoughts reg. the counteroffer seems more tactile.. just my 2 cents..

Any sort of follow up demonstrates weakness on your part. It's all part of the risk of countering an offer. I would wait a bit more but either way you go there is risk in losing the sale.

To be 100% honest... when someone inquires about a name I don't respond until the 2nd attempt at contact. Or I wait 3-5 days to respond.

Nobody is the better salesman than the person who wants to buy the name. If they really want it, they will contact you again.

During that time, they will say the domain name over and over in their heads... thinking out plans and ways they could use the domain. By the time you send them a price they have already convinced themselves that the domain is perfect for them.

Most 'end users' that drop off from inquiries were only interested at $500... and frankly they can keep their $500.

Play it cool, sometimes negotiating promptly will just bury your profit margin.

Stick to eMail unless they want to speak to you personally.

As someone who buys domains I can tell you how the big brokers operate.

BuyDomains: You fill out form online, they email you price or call you. They will reach out to you by phone here and there, never aggressive. In most cases you will get a few emails (automated) about the name you asked about. HEre and there they might let you know about a big discount for buying the name.

DNS: You fill out form, they might call you or not but they put you on the email list for that name. The emails you get will be anything from asking a time to call you to letting you know another person is interested in the name.

AquireThisDomain: they will email you a few times asking to counter offer, never had calls.

Marchex: They will email you back once with a price but you wont hear from them again

MostWantedDomains: they have (at least in my experience) pre set limits as to what they want for the name. Those are min. price and not necessarily the price, they are not aggressive.

Every domain is unique, only you know how many offers you ever got on that name and only you know realistically what the chances are anyone would offer more than the current offer.

Many emails you get about domains are people who are excited now about it, it could very well be he wont buy the domain name now for even 50 bucks.

Thanks for your responses. My scenario is based on a recent offer I received. Still waiting... I will update you when sold.

I have waited 3 years for buyer to make up their mind

and each year when they inquired, the price went up.

finally, they bought before another increase went into effect.

when you don't "have" to sell...leverage is on your side.

:)

imo....

Best to not look desperate - wait on them to make the move.

If you start contacting them via email or phone it looks desperate - patience is the key in this business.

For me it all depends on the domain, some domains I will wait forever for My price, others I might sacrifice for the sake of cash flow if needed.

Recently I had two different buyers and they both took over a year to finally come to their senses and meet my price, it was worth the wait :)
