Hello,
I recently posted if anyone has pre-registered any .Insurance extension domains. Well I'll admit I did go for it. I completely forgot about it and just checked who.is to see if I had gotten it. found out it was not time yet for the domains to be released. Then I found out just yesterday that only Insurance industry people are eligible to register these .insurance domains. is it true?

It's kinda annoying because there was no mention of this RULE when I was allowed to pre-register.

I wonder if there's a RULE that will let me "slide" and register these domains since they did take their sweet time creating this RULE that only insurance industry people can register these domains?

As of right now I have pregistered some .insurance domains.

but now I have to cancel before I get hit with the non- refundable validation fee of $100-$200 per domain.

Just wanted to know if anyone knows more about it here on NP. Thanks.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I think yes, otherwise it doesn't have any other meaning i guess.
might be somebody will have their own views

Also check how many insurance domains (with com) are developed into sites for some good companies, and how many types of insurance available in the market

I don't like this trend with brand new extensions where you have to be an actual end-user of the domain on that brand new extension . That going to kill all potential profit from investing in these new extensions if all these new extensions follow this trend.

but its right you got to be very selective with some extensions like you discussing here, otherwise you have many other (general purpose) extensions available for any kind of domain and you don't have any restrictions.

Hmmm but the thing is... how can they prove that you are NOT in the insurance industry?

You can say that you do part time life insurance sales :) How are they going to prove that it isn't true?

lol trust me I tried! The rep over at instra.com said that whoever ends up getting a .insurance domain has to show proof they are insurance industry reps,or companies. Also there's some stipulation that whoever ends up with a .insurance domain must show afterwards that they will point it to an insurance website that sells insurance or a referral service.

and I think reselling will not be allowed. so once you have it. you can't sell it. at not right away.

very very very very strict. the same goes with .bank too.

besides all the ones I wanted were taken they said by trademark holders.

like
medical.insurance
car.insurance
auto.insurance
health.insurance
and many many more.

out of the 40 I pre-registered (stupidly)
only 4 were not taken by trademark holders. and these 4 keywords were very very generic. I've already cancelled my pre-registrations.

Now that is good move.

well yea! what's the point in paying the $200 non-refundable validation fee to confirm that you are truly an insurance industry person? if in thee end you are not one? lol

I will tell you this though. the Instra.com rep said that I could "pass" my .insurance pre-reg over to say my friend who is in the insurance biz but he would end up owning it. not me.

I couldn't think how I could "work it out". so I said forget it. I was surprised she said it was possible. that I was the one who pre-registered it and before I even own the domain I can tell the registrar that I plan to give it to another person?

Weird right?

Jeepers man that really sucks @ss.

from my list of 30 .insurance pre-reg. the ones that were not trademark holder taken was....

Cancer.Insurance
Find.Insurance
Shop.Insurance
Plan.Insurance

I sure hope this .insurance for insurance industry people can only be for insurance industry people trend won't end up happening to other extensions.

Can you imagine if .casino could only be reg by Casinos? or if .taxi could be reg by taxicab businesses? or .lawyer by lawyers?

so on and so forth.

@Avtar629 what was the reason why other people are not allowed to registered .insurance?

they want to prevent us Schemers aka domainers from registering .insurance domains to only resell it to Insurance companies for millions of dollars. ;) . so they want to make sure only Enduser Insurance people get to buy this extension.

yup. sucks. Cancer.insurance would have been great to snag. especially when CancerInsurance.com sold for $6.9 million.

Insurance companies can buy all insurance extension they wish. But sometimes, they aren't creative enough to make a pricy name. It goes both ways left and right. The current insurance names out there sounds dry. Needs more fresh name. But again domainers are creative and talented. Insurance companies will keep their name dry.

yea it was a fully running insurance referral website for Cancer insurance specifically. so that $6.9 million was for the website too.

I thought the decision was made by ICANN?

well ultimately yes. but the extension owners bring the subject up to Icann. they push the issue they want to happen.
