If you registered a .com for 10 years and transfer it to another registrar in theory this should add one more year to it. Then you can transfer and add more year and then one more... Does it work like this?

By the way, which is the cheapest registrar where I register a name for 9 or 10 years and then transfer to another one?

Indeed - I tried this on one of my more "long-haul" names just as a test, and sure enough it pushed it back an extra 2 months, but not over the 10 year mark.

I havnt tried this, but I knew that it wouldnt allow you to exceed 10 years. Im glad you tried it though, now I know exactly what happens. Long Term? Im not sure you can beat GoDaddys discount pricing...

Thank you folks for the info. So the strategy appears to be registering a domain at godaddy for 9 years and then transferring out to namecheap or moniker.

What I plan is to register a few average names and keep them for 10 years no matter what happens. A 10 year plan will cost me probably around 70 usd per domain. I think today's average domains will be valuable 10 years later.

On last November I checked all cvcv.net's and found 20 very nice ones. Now all are gone. Those type domains would be a good investment for long term.

I had expected more of a push by registrars to highlight the 10 year limit in light of expected yearly price increases (But will they outweigh the opportunity cost of spending the extra money now? Hello, .41 "Forever" stamp!)
