Hello,

In the latest example of the community quickly responding with good intentions to help protect others, the current rules and policies (and future features) around sales listings are sometimes counterproductive to community awareness and safety.

This is not a simple problem to solve from a moderation standpoint, but we can do better.

While the rules are effective at avoiding other problems, such as un/intentional sabotage and unnecessary clutter, there are circumstances where they hinder the community's ability to help prevent fraud.

Let's discuss solutions.

Here are a few ideas:
  1. If a moderator determines that a sales listing needs to be researched or verified, then the existing commentary of concerns expressed in the sales thread should not be deleted until that process has concluded. If it concludes unsatisfactory, then those comments should not be deleted at all.
  2. Whenever comments of concerns take place in a sales listing, they should be moved to their own thread in Reviews so that the discussion may continue and the community can be aware of the concerns expressed with the listing.
  3. Allow members to post a link in a sales listing to a discussion thread about the listing where concerns can be raised and discussed (outside of the sales listing).
  4. A feature that allows community members to publicly flag a sales listing and provide insights to their concerns, which we display near the top of the listing for others to consider before proceeding.

#4 is a more polished version of #3 that will require development, whereas #3 could be instated immediately if approved.

Thoughts on these ideas? Any other ideas?

Note: In the future, sellers will be able to delete any comment they want from their sales listings and turn off comments entirely. Let's consider solutions that can help before and after that change.
