Hey!

Before I knew the rules I bought domains with no value, so I'm in loss, maybe that's the reason why I feel I can't make much money doing this.

Don't know, I am learning but it feels like in 2017 all domains with some value are registered and if you are trying to catch some expired, there is list of others that are waitin for this oppurtunity.

Any words that could cheer me up... please?
How much in loss have you ever been, did you buy domain for example for $100 and you couldn't sell it? (Sorry for asking this I just feel I need to :D ...)

Thanks! :D

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I bought a lot of crap one year ago when I started, because I never gained enough knowledge about the business. What to buy? How to sell? Now that I know enough, I know I will make more money here than anywhere else. There are other ways to buy domains than handregging, expiring auctions, buying from other investors. Keep learning and buy more domains after you're 100% sure you will sell the domain for a lot of profit.

The good thing about domaining is that one sale can usually cover all your previous newbie losses. If you manage to get to the point when you have that sale.

Ye, I feel that after my first sale (even $50 and less), I'd feel amazing. I just have to keep going I guess. :)

Great sale. My first sale was of 10$.

So, you are doing good. Cheer up bro.

Also, if you FEEL you cant make money, you will not make money.

You will only make money when you FEEL you will make money.

Hope these words of wisdom enlightens you. (-;

Hide your credit card
Read the threads in this forum
Check the names that are selling, and those that don't
When you think you can see a pattern, register a maximum of 5 names, and don't pay more than registration fees for any of them.
Tray a variety of methods to sell them, and don't register anything else until you have sold at least one of them.

Hang in there. Be selective in your registrations. Make sure you are learning about how and where to sell your domains.

Most people quit for this reason.

It really does take money to make money here, or a lot of luck.

How much in loss have you ever been, did you buy domain for example for $100 and you couldn't sell it?

Sometimes it takes years for a domain name to sell, and even decent domains that could sell for $xxxx might only have one or two buyers - and they only want to pay $100 what YOU paid for it.

This is not an easy game, which again is why most people quit.

my first sale was $350 on ebay - but it was over a year after i started domaining.

if you don't have patience and cash flow - this industry is not for you.

if you are looking at selling to other domainers you should expect pennies on the dollar as they are all looking to invest and resell the names them self.

this never has and never will be a get rich quick industry. it all comes down to experience finding and selling good names.

Dont quit your day job to do Domaining

Have another way that domains give something back to you other than domain sales.

Dont try moving up until you get feed back that you are doing something right.

First and foremost: domaining is a marathon. If you're a sprinter at heart, you will not do too well here. Many people here talk about "domain flipping". This is fun, but the pickings are usually small. Relatively speaking, of course. You can do much better hand registering or buying cheap in aftermarkets and selling at outrageous markup to end users! But this is the long game. The marathon. You need to learn a lot about the market. About the tools of the trade. How to keep your costs down. Grow a substantial asset base. Ensure sufficient working capital so you can afford to be very patient... and much much more...

Welcome to the Club! :cigar:

Keep learning, reading, watching a lot of useful stuff about domaining..
Subscribe to rss feed from Domaining.com so you'll get updated everyday about the news and strategies in this industry.
Try it for yourself and slowly find out what works best for you.

I am newbie too in this industry.
My first sale was only $15, it's not a profit, but loss. But at least I got positive review on my flippa account.
About 2 weeks ago, finally I made my second sale for $700 by doing outbound effort.
And it's profit now, good ROI. I acquired the name from GD closeout for only $5.

Honestly, I enjoy my journey in domain industry. I enjoy scanning a huge list of expiring name list and find a gem from that list. It's really exciting. And I hope you enjoy your journey too. Don't give up....

Hey cheer up. I have been doing this for years and I still buy garbage sometimes. lol One day you make a sale and it sparks your interest. Kind in mind only a select few will have large sales.
I do like this name I regged today even though it had been dropped. Being dead a long time never seems to go out of style. :xf.grin:

EgyptianTomb.com could be a game app or info site.

Don't buy/reg anything in hurry. Just keep reading this forum as much as you can, as many posts as you can, gain the knowledge, grasp, learn all this at least for 3 months, ideal would be 6 months but 3 months minimum, also while doing that find out if you can connect with any particular niche, there are various niches that work for different domainers like brandables, short letters, chips, numerics, CCtlds and so on.

make sure how you would want to approach like quick flips at comparatively low price at places like NP or long wait and watch game by listing at places like sedo or auctioning off at flippa. learn about different so many marketpalces or things like parking, estibots etc. once you go through all this. only after that you can consider buying any names. even then think verify twice before you decide to buy or reg anything, ask and take guidance from all the pros, helpful senior members and community here. Don take decisions in jiffy. take everything easy, go slow and steady. Domain trading attracts easily considering the scope of money but like every other profession and business, its not smooth or cakewalk. one needs to be efficient and sound to be successful, besides luck can also be a factor.

PS i was starting to worry after a month of registrations most of useless. then i had my first sale of close to 500 (regged for $1.99). so dont lose the hope. just approach it attentively and sincerely. and you shall get the success.

Hope this helps you. Wish you all the best. :)

All great advice and truisms. As I posted in another thread, last night I let go of about 100 dot coms, a few of which I had for ten years. Tried my best to move them but many were names I should have never regged in the first place. Let the bad names go (do not re-register when they expire) and spend that money on names you have spent some time thinking about and researching for potential end users. On average, a day, I hand register about 3 names and look on this site and auctions for others I want...there are plenty of good names out there. Use this site as a learning tool...there are many members here that will offer good and free advice. Search out registrars that have good pricing on features you may want (free privacy, free or cheap email, etc.) as well as sale prices on different domain extensions (gdaddy has a few right now) that can save you money. Good luck!

Look one of the most important things you must have is determination to never give up and believe me there is going to be lots of time that you will want to give up.

That being said cheer up there also will be lots of time's that you will do great and feel like your on top of the world and can do this forever.
I remember some time ago when i still didn't know a nickel about buying and selling domains i was searching for expired domains and bought pornxpic.com and 2 other because they were in popular industries i put the 3 in auction has bundle on flippa but the title of the auction was just one domain didn't know how to change it to portfolio or bundle i was positive that it would sell and i really made a sale i think i sold them for 40$. A week or 2 passed and i learned about namebio did a search for pornxpic.com found out that it sold for 480$ in the past i got a little disappointed that i sold it for so cheap but at the same time got encouraged and thought that flipping domains was real easy so i bought another domain took a loss of 80$ lol just little proof that some times you just have to follow your intuition and have a bit of luck but never have over confidence.

From my experience you have to decide if you want to buy and sell domains has a hobby or has a profitable business. If you want to flip domains for a hobby you don't have any pressure you can have a job and invest in domains for the long run, if you want to become professional and profitable business in the domain industrie you have to spend all of your time living and breathing domains you also need big capital to play with real money. Has the old saying goes "If you want to make good money you have to spend good money".

The most basic and important steps you have to know are:

Never give up

In the domain world you need LOTS of patience.

Don't quite your job you also will need capital (maybe in the future when you have experience and good money from domaning you can go to your boss stick him the middle finger and quite if is a jerk of a boss xD if he was a good boss be polite and thank him for all the opportunities he gave you and tell him that you quite)

You need to do research and educate yourself even if you have 20 years in domaining you are always learning new things also the market changes every day and the more information the better.

Try to build your presence in the domain world the more people that you do business with that are satisfied and have positive feedback and good things to say about you doing business with them the more people it attract's because word gets around fast and they will feel more secure in doing business with you.

Always be polite and professional.

Never register trademark names and inform yourself about trademarks.

You need practice, knowledge and time to develop a intuition and understanding of what is a great domain and what it's worth.

Decide a strategy by trying many of them and see which one his best for you, example do you want to sell domains for cheap but fast, do you want to invest in the long term and wait for offers, do you want to do outbound sales etc..

Stay updated on coupons and subscribe to newsletters of informative domain website like domaining.com to keep updated

There are lots of areas inside the domain business focus on one example brandables, 4 letters, 1 word, IDN, new TLDs etc...

Try all the marketplaces and see which one is best for the type of domain your selling or buying.

Research all resources and tools like Namepros, Domainshearpa.com Dnjournal.com, Domaining.com, Namebio.com, Namejet.com, Estibot.com Efty.com Expireddomains.net, Domainsatate.com Dngeek.com and much more just educate yourself,

Other domainers also posted great advice and feedback in this thread follow there advice.

Hope this help's a bit.

firstly you have to make up your mind,
if you want to be a daytrader or a value investor

For me there is no point in making 100% on a $20 USD name

there are costs attached other then the domain buying price

like:
transaction fees
commission fees
bookkeeping fees
tax fees
laywer fees
tools fees
your TIME

As a rule of thumb I will not keep a name that is worth less then $1k USD
unless for liquid assets like 4l.com

why are 99% of the domainers loosing money?
( IF that is a true statement - which nobody can verify)

because you are not looking for a high ROI
that covers your costs of doing it losing money for years

Well said. An old mentor once told me, "I really hate working, and I really hate working for nothing"

I hand registered DNRocks.com, a couple of days ago. Made a blog on it, planning to write articles on it now.
I think that's a decent name rather than buying a premium domain for a blog that may or may not work.
Btw:
OldStreetBarber.com is available, I hand registered it yesterday and then cancelled today.
So, decent names still out there.
