I am thinking of starting my own registrar in Belgium (small country in Europe).

I'm at the point where I'm swallowing all the possible information about starting and running county code registrars and can't really find where to start (apart from the legal requirements issued by the main registrar).

Could you please give me few directions?

thank you in advance,
Helmuts

You have two options:
  • operate as a reseller for a registrar
  • work out agreements with each registry to become a true registrar
Each TLD you want to carry is going to cost you money.
For example if you want to become a .be registrar you will need at least €2500 in startup fees::

Then you'll pay €4 per registered domain. So if you are going to manage 1000 domains it becomes a worthwhile proposition. You'll need volume to recoup your investment...

The conditions vary for each TLD. Some are more demanding than others.

This is a high-volume, low margin business.
In my own opinion, you'll probably want to sell ancillary services like hosting, SSL certificates etc.

PS: I am thinking about doing the same for two ccTLDs, but this would be to manage our own portfolio of domains, not to sell to the public.
