Just sold sushi-man.com from an Epik SSL lander for $4200. This is one of Epik's O&O domains. I don't normally report sales but these days we are routinely asking for $10K+ for good hyphen .COM names and seeing sincere engagement.

The great gTLD experiment has been run. I now routinely sell even ccTLD registrants are upgrading from their ccTLD to .COM if they can afford it. I was late to acknowledge it but the risk-reward equation for speculators overwhelmingly favors .COM.

When it comes to hyphenated .COM, SEO is your friend. I recommend to use SSL landers but any SEO lander will probably do the trick to drive inquiries.

Hyphenated names are terrible investments unless you're trying to sell in the German market.

Been holding 3d-print.in
I guess 3d-print.com was sold for $6k... Haven't received any offers yet!
The asking price for 3dprint.in has been set at $50k! So it seems that guy is definitely getting decent offers

Work to get ranked in search with the landing page

Please buy it, and show us how to rank it. Go for a one page Hot-biscuit landing page as you suggest, as I am curious how some of these things like this really actually work with successful people doing them.

Re hyphens, totally agree that it has to make sense. I think the strongest case is when the word is often spelled with a hyphen in writing. That is followed by cases where strictly speaking the hyphen should be used because it is a compound adjective (which I am slowly learning for the first time now  that I write for the NamePros Blog. Most people do not follow these rules in their writing, but given that grammatically correct domain names have an advantage I would give more weight to hyphens that strictly speaking are correct according to the expression. And of course they have value when the word is very high value, even with a hyphen, or the market for the name is mainly Germany and some nearby countries where they are desired.

^
Good call about compound adjectives...after doing research yesterday, I purchased ones that actually made sense in writing...ie:

Life-Sized.com, Leg-Warmers.com, Strawberry-blonde.com, One-Fourth.com, Four-Hundred.com, Spanish-Speaking.com, Heart-broken.com, Light-brown.com, Mid-Winter.com, Second-rate.com, Nose-Bleed.com, Full-Length.com, Three-Fourths.com, Multi-angle.com, Piping-hot.com, Spine-Chilling.com, Scary-looking.com, Head-aches.com, Tooth-brushes.com, and many more all to be sold on either Hy-phens.com, HyphenatedDomains.com, Hyphenated-domains.com, or Hyphen-domains.com....I'm thinking Hy-phens.com. What do you think? I'm also up for another bulk-sale if interested...and yes, I picked up Bulk-Sale.com too.

Of that list, the one I like most is Life-Sized.com. It would be a logical brand name for a lot of different things, a movie title, a blog, etc. Heart-Broken.com is my next favorite, followed by Head-aches.com because these are life-problems where people search for solutions.

However, if you need a new toothbrush, you probably go to Amazon or pick it up at the grocery store. Now, of course you could have a new toothbrush innovation come along but then they would probably brand it. The people who would then want tooth-brush.com might be affiliates promoting a high margin new product.

Overall though, I think you are good at the hyphen game, and if you are getting these names for reg-fee or close, I imagine you will do just fine. I think the key, though tedious, is to web search the term and gauge if there are logical buyers. If there is at least 1 big one, or 3+ moderate sized ones, it could work out.

As noted elsewhere, my big thing is "forget about outbound", and "forget about PPC". Just focus on SSL landers that you can rank in search and that can provide a compelling opportunity for someone to buy or lease the domain.

With Epik of course, they can take instant delivery. You can do $1 leases in your sleep if all you want to do is bait the hook. I have not experimented with really cheap leases but I am saying it is possible. I prefer to do just "Make Offer" and invite a conversation.

Sometimes what we are told as best advice doesn't always hold true. I saw recently that a hyphenated domain name with a non dot.com sold for around $9,000. Now, I don't know about you, but I would call that a good day at the office. I think I fully understand domain investing now. Anyone can buy a domain name (no matter what the cost), but the true art of this business is selling them.

Is it better to have $1,000 in potential revenue in your domains appraised values or $100 in working capital which you can use again and again. I fall into the latter category and no doubt I will eventually tell you how I get on.

Go forth and domain.

I would say that you're wrong, but I'm not a pro, so doesn't really matter what I think. I would say that it's easy to sell a domain( easy to use a landing page), but the true art is to buy the right domain at the right price. With the exception of a few good brokers( and even them are good because they accept to broker only good domains) most of us will use a landing page and a few main marketplaces, so it's not a big difference.
Regarding the working capital and the potential revenue, I'm with you on this one, for me it's better to have $100 today and reinvest it over and over than $1000 in one year( with a few exceptions, of course)

My own favourite (which is mine) is:

i-am-ibiza .com

I just don't think it works without the hyphens.

My most valuable hyphenated domain is:

x-genetics .com

Even if I don't fully understand what they are.

And I am glad that you disagree. It makes life more interesting and me more determined. I am long term unemployed and money is too tight to mention but for whatever reason I believe that I can be a successful domain investor. I have bought cheaply over the last few months and have yet to sell any, but this is not something I have tried too hard to do yet, although obviously this is something that is part of my overall long term strategy.

My most valuable appraised domain has an estimated value of $3,400 which I don't think is too bad for a relative newbie.

In addition, I have an estimated domain portfolio value in excess of $320,000 which is just waiting to be registered. All I need is more money.

I guess it's my only bad habit. Domain Vaping of sorts.

I have an easy solution for you: if your registered domains are at least decent value, you can sell them to other domainers with bigger pockets and more patience for xx and reinvest the profit in buying your new list of unregistered domains.

That would ultimately be my preferred business model. My current situation is 122 domains purchased for $1,800 or $14.75 each and an estimated appraisal value of $63,000 or $516 each so even if I assume I could with some hard graft get 10% of the appraised value I would consider that a success.

I am trying to find the sweet spot between purchase price and selling price and all advice that I receive will be viewed as good advice until proven otherwise.

Thanks for taking the time to engage with me.

Hyphen domains with quality keyword still sell just few domainers are taking advantage of it.
I own few.

One of my best is Med-Services dot com over 19yrs old.

I also sold Alpha-Laser.com for $2688

Hypen domain with the right keyword will always sell for good price but the patient to wait for the good price is the challenge many of us face.

This thread reminded me my first hyphenated domain name sale.
I sold m-business.com for $1,200 in 2007, which encouraged me a lot when I was a newbie in this industry. It was a lot of money to me and bought me a lot more domain names.

Hyphenated are not very good for businesses who want to build a strong brand with lots of direct type in traffic. A hyphen in the name lowers a brand's professionalism to a good extent BUT they are fine for sites that will rely on mostly search engine traffic from indexed page ranks, like forums and blogs.

When I were a lad many more names had a hyphen...even e-mail but for some reason they have been de-hyphenated and airbrushed from history. Even words which were two words when I was learning English have morphed into ( or is that in to ) one word.

I shall have to keep on learning...see, you can teach an old trick to be a dog!!!

This is a nice one:

I would buy it but the registrant can get more from a retail buyer. However, names like that I would buy all day long.

I just approved you for selling and landering/parking external domains. You also have NP pricing now. Good luck.

Could I also have the NP pricing?

Can the funds from sold domains be used as in-store credit for new registrations and renewals?
