Your point well taken. I must add that even you are losing money (as you say because of higher price names investing), but you have concrete plans or know what you are doing, that is different to someone who is losing because he or she has not fully learned the domaining game.

What is forcing you to sit at home all day? It is an option, but so is relaxing on the beach selling domains. You can also travel and sell domains.

All you need is an internet connection, anywhere in the world. There is far more flexibility that with most normal jobs.

I don't make anything atm. I started early this year, so only in the domain game for less than 6 months. I am at break even currently. I don't invest a lot in names, so I don't make a lot of sales as well. If the sales come in, I will take part of that money to spend more on names. If they end up being wrong decisions, it is still profit I "gamble" with.

I don't think I would ever do this full time, as it would take a lot of the fun away for me. The added stress of needing to make enough money to pay the bills etc is something I would not want. Right now, I can live off my full time job and if I start to make regular money in domaining, it is an extra. If the amount I make is big and consistent enough, I might think of working part time, or let the missus work part time without it having an effect on our spending habits.

Interesting to revisit this poll nearly one and a half year later.

How much has your average gross profit per month increased/decreased since then?

I disagree. 99% of domains that most end users want are in the hands of 1% of top domainers. The remaining 99% of domainers are fighting for crumbs.

Mine can't really be measured on a "per month" basis because I don't do outbound selling and my sales are occasional. I'm at $25,025 over the last 3 years, so roughly $8,341/yr. All of those names sold were low-risk (aka cheap) aftermarket purchases or handregs.

I spend about $3k a year in renewals.

If I had more names listed at different marketplaces, or at low BIN prices, or decided to invest more time into selling, I could be doing more volume.

They probably misread the poll and though it said "how much do you spend a month"

    That would make more sense....O_o

I mean in order to make $40k in sales in month, you have to have at least 30 000 domains.
In order to make $20k in sales in month, you probably have to have 15000 or more domains.
    Medicore .com portfolio.
That are sales, not profit yet.

i could see 1-3 people doing $20k in month in this forum, if lucky.

I don't know why it surprises people. Each of you could probably think of 5-10 guys that either broker or own names that sell normally in 6-7 digits and then there quite a few that keep low profile. 29 and more $240K+ guys is quite reasonable

With 15,000 domains you should gross at least $150,000-200,000/month IMO. A 15,000 name portfolio that only makes $20,000 has a terrible sell-through and/or average sales price.

1% would be normal or even on a good side for overall portfolio, which means 150 sales in a year, and with average price of $1500 after commissions, it would gross $225,000 out of which around $130,000 would go towards renewals netting around $95,000. That is not too bad, if the original cost of collecting 15,000 names was, let's say around $300,000 and not much of work is required.

I have seen real life numbers, and they are so like I posted. If you have seen other numbers in REAL life, then you can share them. Not those new-tld fantasy stories, but those real life .com stories.

If one owns 300 names that each are worth to end user $100,000+ in average, then he/she needs to sell only 1% of his portfolio annually to make $300,000+ with under $3000 in renewals... Of course, he/she has $3MM-5MM worth of his capital tied to those names, but return is not bad.
