Your asking is of provocative nature and my answer as well:

    On 17 November, 2020 brought from China 3L .com for $72,000 / On April 12, 2021 sold for $210,000 to F500 co.

Oh, I get that completely Brad and I agree.

It is just that sometimes we need to ask these questions, also from the perspective of newer domain investors. I do understand that you are very well off with your portfolio, but you also spent decades building it.

I was not many months here (I was very busy purchasing tons of NFTs/crypto, my new passion!) but when I read some posts here from recent weeks, I see a lot of quarreling/unhappy and financially poor people - I have a feeling many are just wasting their time and life with domaining.

This is also one of the reasons I have opened this discussion - honest answers can prevent new people from losing precious time chasing the illusion.

I mean - if someone is really buying $5 closeouts, they might be better of working in their local McDonalds.

Apart from that, I am seriously interested in people's opinion and mainly RESULTS to see whether .com might be a good investment - but from the perspective of "new" investor, not someone who has 20 years old well established .com portfolio :)

    Seems very nice, congrats! :)

But ... did you become RICH from that? (RICH as defined for the purposes of this thread)

I mean - for example, if your net worth is 900 mil, it might be a waste of your time to do a transaction for approx 150k profit.

(no need to answer this really, lol, as those are your private data not suitable for the public forum - just a rhetorical question to illustrate better what I am after here)

I have really only been a serious domain investor since the 2008-2009 stock market crash. I am not someone who was around grabbing amazing single word .COM back in the 1990s.

The vast majority of sales I make now are from purchases in the last 5 years, not from 20 years ago.

I do agree that a lot of people are wasting their time with domains. It is not easy money.

I mean if you are going to gamble there are meme stocks, crypto, NFT, NBA Top Shot, sports cards, or any other number of inflating bubbles. With low interest rates and people willing to take extreme risks you can get rich if you time it right, or lose everything. There has probably never been any time in modern history where you could make more money with less talent...You just have to get very lucky and not get left holding the bag.

"... and got some substantial results."

1 transaction is enough for this thread.

That is interesting and I guess also a bit reassuring information for many, thank you for sharing.

I personally somehow kind of guesstimated your portfolio as 20 y.o. (it's good quality so I was thinking it had to be built around that time in the past). So it is nice and good to see that you are making sales from name purchases in the last 5 years.

    Buy-Sell-Reinvest. Rinse & Repeat.

That is what has worked for me. I started with a couple domains that I used for business and have around 6,000 now using that model over the years.

I think my best advice is consistency is key. You never know when a good opportunity is going to come up, so you have to keep looking.

I have started domaining from end of the 2020 December, i have sold 5 .com domains until now(i am not including the ones i sold here on NP), I don't want to give a number about the revenue yet my current income makes me feel good for now. Am i rich ? Yes i feel rich not because i am selling domain names, because i know what i do and what i want and learning and improving everyday how to do that.

There's is a misconception and false assumption in your question.

People don't become rich in a year doing domaining regardless of the extension. I doubt there are even that many industries in the world where people become rich within a year.

Note, that my definition of rich might differ from someone else's definition. For me, it's upwards of a million dollars.

For you to sell and make 1 million+ in profit either on a single domain or a collection, that means a substantial investment in 6 figures or 7 to begin with. Such an investor isn't poor to begin with.

Generally, people might go from poor to less poor or from rich to richer. That is if the odds are in their favour.

So, the right question isn't "Did you became rich investing in .com in 2020-2021?". It should be, "Were you profitable investing in .com in 2020-2021?"

    ***THIS***

I think that there are various worthwhile points embedded within @Brands.International question, but the get rich is probably not right focus.

It is definitely true that by looking at major sales, many of which have been held for a long time, can be deceptive. Also, the difference between a name that sells for a lot and one which no one wants at any price can be subtle. Just as most startups lose money in early years, it is probably true that domain investors get better over time, at least those who put in the effort and are disciplined in approach.

The vast majority don''t do domaining full time (and should not). From BB figures on their top sellers, clearly some people are doing well in the brandable niche, enough to live on, but those are the exceptions, and I suspect most have been in domain names 5+ years.

Those who aggressively outbound - I think Yogi S made at least $25k in less than one year, after starting with a $200 initial investment - can definitely be profitable. That is impressive but depends on lot of work and willingness to do outbound.

I agree with @bmugford point that there are numerous models which can be profitable. Nothing wrong with doing most sales wholesale at beginning if you can be profitable at it.

By following the Report Completed Sales thread at NP it is obvious there are certain people selling a lot. It is hard to be sure in most cases the size of investment and the renewal costs.

The embedded tenet that those who built a portfolio of one word names 10+ years ago are in best position is true.

Overall, I have always been pretty sure that significantly more lose money than make money on domain names. One should only be in it if one feels passionate, is willing to do the work, and is comfortable with the risk of the investment. And one needs to work to a path of being 'better' than the average domain investor to be profitable.

Thanks for contributing - although I am confused a bit - what do you mean exactly?
Did you get RICH in 2020 - 2021 from .com domain investing, or not? :)

Thanks for sharing friend - so do you feel it was worth your time, or would you do better financially if you would focus on something else (like for example putting more effort into your regular job/business/whatever)?

    Thank you.

Yes, job first. I didn't do any outbound other than list at ClubHouse.

Domaining can be looked at the same way a person who breeds exotic animals and sells them (haha)
Frankly, full-time domaining isn't reasonable in my eyes. Some do it, not enough money in it for myself.

I've looked at your portfolio over the past two years. You're a great investor, Marek. Not too hasty and only quality which is brilliant.

I'll be selling Superannuation next ;D

Maybe Brands.International’s original question should be (have been) - “In ‘20-‘21, which investments did you get rich/make more in - .com or new gTLDs?” Seems more relevant to his question of ‘should he start investing in .com domains now, or stick with his new gTLD’ strategy.

@FolioTeam thank you for your post.

I am perfectly aware that the question of this thread might be uncomfortable and even irritating for some people.

But sometimes you have to ask these uncomfortable things. Otherwise, we are chasing dreams.

Consider this: even if I would ask the softer version "Were you profitable investing in .com in 2020-2021?" the chances are 99% here would have to answer No. Or prove me otherwise by posting success stories!

And if I ask the tougher version, the provocative one as Lox said, which is difficult to pass with the YES answer, what did we get in this thread so far?

A good example of a domainer who indeed did it, brought by Brad. And also nice information that Brad is making good progress with domain names he acquired in the last 5 years (which I found a bit reassuring).

So we have around 1 mil members here, 99,99% are not pros with large old portfolios - pls share you success stories as per thread questions, if there are any.

Just come here and say - I spent a lot of time on .com domaining in 2020 - 2021, and it was worth it. I am not chasing the dreams :)

Thank you for your post @hawkeye, I do get your point.

But I still prefer to stick with that original question if I can - the reactions on it are giving me the needed and precious information I need. I am sure also new people who are reading this thread will form their opinions based on feedback it receives.

A little bit aside from the topic: it is so irritating to many patient and thoughtful investors that 15 y.o. kids on Tic Toc who shilled DOGE for months as a joke are now buying new houses .. and many people here are spending hours/days/weeks/years carefully thinking and budgeting their domain investments, and still sometimes have troubles paying their monthly bills or mortgage.

Life is comedy sometimes. But back to our domains, lol :)
