How important to buy other extensions and which ones to buy?

I have an idea for a website and have the .com. I am just wondering which of the other extensions are worth getting? Is it common for people to use another one and then steal your traffic? I'm concerned of wasting my money on extra ones if its pointless but don't want to loose valuable traffic. Which ones in particular should I purchase?

if you own the unhyphenated .com then imo you don't need to waste any money on other extensions.

If you have unlimited funds, then buy ever darn extension of your domain.
Otherwise, just to have the .com is enough.
I never have worried about someone getting the .net or whatever of my name .com and use it to try and grab traffic from me.

For me here in the US , I always like to buy the other top extension for my active sites. net, org, info, co, us, biz, me, mobi.
To me its just part of the annual expense for my sites and it would bother me if someone created a site with the same name.
I guess I'm just territorial that way.

for a project I'm looking to develop I always grab the .com .net .org at a minimum.
