Hi Domain Friends,

I am planning a NamePros Blog article looking ahead to 2023. I need your help!

Please vote in the poll. Also, answer some, or all, of the following questions, providing your answers in the discussion below.

1. What TLDs (up to 3) do you think will be much stronger in 2023?

2. Which (up to 3) TLDs will be much weaker in 2023?

3. What sectors or niches (up to 3) will have a great 2023?

4. What sectors or niches (up to 3) will have a poor 2023?

5. Do you think top, mid or lower end of retail market will do best in 2023?

Note that in questions 1 and 2 I am looking for strength relative to the current situation, not about overall strength.

I am looking for perspectives from both experienced and relatively new domain investors.

Feel free to add any comments about how you see the next year in domain name investing.

Thank you in advance,

Bob

In 2023, we're going to see Handshake take more of Web3 market share.

In 2023, dot-one on the legacy protocol will continue to rise in adoption and value.

In 2023, dot-com will show a decline in aftermarket attention and sales from recent years.

In 2023, "trends" with regards to domain name investments will take a back seat to staple names that survive the times. In any TLD. No need for silly dashes, nonsense spellings and combinations, or inferior longtails.

Please, come back to this post in a year. Fellow investors, tell us how your investing went.

You're probably right on the first point.
Not so much in the second point but still a possibility.
2025 will prob be the recovery year (if not 2024)

Crappy names should be dropped during these times

Recovery starts after the worst ends. We say the same thing.
Recovery should last for min. 3 years. Roughly next 10 years will be lost years.

Economic crisis may affect some industries positively. To have a better idea on what are those industries, we should read about the last crisis in 1929 and previous ones. But reading will not be enough. Because each economic crisis is different. Only some major similarities could be predicted such as high unemployment, increase in health related problems, increase in high risk investments for quick cash including gambling and so on.

Domain names and websites are part of online advertising industry and advertisement expenses are high risk investment by nature. So, economic crisis may affect domain names positively. In tough times, as a last resort more people may want to try their chance in advertisement.

These are not specific to the domain name investment market. These are the larger trends in the market.

The .COM is going to have a rough few quarters in 2023 because some of the discounted regs used to lessen the impact of Covid registrations washing out of the zone in 2022 will be up for renewal and most will drop. This will lead to a spike in deletions in Q1/early Q2 possibly above the normal Ghost of Christmas Past drop. A lot of low-end/highly speculative .COM regs will be dropped. (Easy prediction as this always happens.) Not sure if there will be a return of a $1 .COM offer but if things get really bad then don't be too suprised to see it reappear. That may shift a lot of the new registrations volume away from the discounted new gTLDs.

The .ORG has been outperforming .NET and .ORG gTLDs. It helps that it has little of the baggage of .NET and it resembles the ccTLDs in terms of renewals.

The .BIZ and .INFO have been struggling throughout 2022 and things may not improve for them. They've been struggling at a country market level for years and relying on brand protection registrations. The increased renewal fees have seen businesses reconsidering their .BIZ and .INFO registrations.

The big threat to .COM will not come from the new gTLDs or the talks about a new round of gTLDs. It quite clearly will come from the ccTLDs. From 2019 to 2022, the momentum in the market shifted to the ccTLDs and many ccTLDs now get double, or more, the number of new registrations each month than .COM in their countries. That increasing inward focus in ccTLDs will affect the resale price of domain names in those ccTLDs. The problem is that newbie domainers not understanding that ccTLD sales and naming dynamics are different will lose money by applying the old .COM rules on pricing to ccTLDs. No change there!

Repurposed ccTLDs (.tv, .io, .co, .cc, .ai) will be caught between a rock and a hard place if the worst of a market shift happens between .COM and the ccTLDs. The .us ccTLD has a chance to improve but it really, really needs to improve its marketing and stay away from the discounting model.

Regards...jmcc

3. What sectors or niches (up to 3) will have a great 2023?

AI, AI, AI

The explosion of the AI industry in 2023 is the same as the explosion of the XR industry in 2025
