Well, I said it in the beginning of MS's switch in terminology.
Those new devices (acer etc) do not fit the definition of 'mixed reality' as it applies to the tech.
They do fit the definition of mixed reality as being both VR & AR.
They could be summarized as a VR Goggle that also does AR.
True MR is completely computer generated, with a virtual representation of reality, but not actual reality.
Be that as it may be, we have a pure 'marketing term' in front of us.
And only those playing Microsoft's game will be using it by marketing with it.
But I still watch for what Oculus does with the Santa Cruz due out late this year.
It is completely similar in concept, but what will they call it ? We will have to wait to find out.
But it seems like Facebook has drawn lines in the sand already with this.
Being that it is a marketing term from MS, I choose to call it WMR.
Windows Mixed Reality and I think that is truly accurate.

But for names, consumers will have the final say as to what it is referred to as.
I'm not play'n what I can't see. YET.

I think we're all spending too much time trying to convince each other about AR VR MR etc.

If we all put our efforts into actually creating social awareness beyond the forum we would all benefit a lot quicker. X

I know some members who are promoting VR/AR outside of this forum, I'm 1 of them.

Haha, I see that too. At least he has covered himself if 'xs' becomes the new future tech acronym of choice.

Just been thinking about the history of this thread.

The same people who said Windows Holographic was bad for holo names now say Windows Mixed Reality is the deal clincher for MR names.

The same people who say xr is worthless because a catchall acronym doesn't mean anything (people will search for their particular experiences) are trumpeting the fact that Microsoft are now using mixed reality/mr as a catchall term/acronym.

Is that refering to me because I have never indicated any of those views lol ?

I said Microsoft trademarking certain Holo + Keywords when they did not own the domain or had no interest in buying that domain was bad thing.

I personally see potential in a catchall term, offers big scope for companies branding under an acronym that covers the VR/AR/MR realities.

Although if there is/isn't a catch all phrase doesn't matter too much because there will always be companies wanting to brand either VR/AR or MR anyways.

And I thought Windows Holographic was a massive boost for the holographic keyword. Yes Microsoft were refering to their tech as Mixed Reality at that stage as well but the tech naming of windows is quite a big thing.

At the time I purchased a few Holograpgic keywords myself.

Who are these people lol we all know that the argument for ar/vr/mr/hr/ir/cr/rr/360/holo/hologram/holographic/mixedreality/augmentedreality/virtualreality/cinematicreality/hyperreality/hybridreality/immersive/immersion/immerse/immersed/metaverse wow i could keep going we can end all the craziness now with xr

At first i didn't like holo. But after a couple of months i came back on opinion and regd a bunch of holo related domains. I am still holding 35+- holo domains (5%+- of my portfolio) for long term. I still see potential.

I personely don't see mixed reality in combination with microsoft as a catch all term. I see mixed reality as one identity (tech) just like virtual reality. Yes i don't like catch all terms but i have shared many times i do see potential for XR in combination with a startup delevering a VR and MR service. Still i think when a company is big enough to offer their service on both technologies they will use (in a lot of situations) a clean and short brand name like 888.com, microsoft.com, casino.com etc.

There is money to be made for startups doing things differently and to make a "killer app". It will be a mission on it own to develop software optimised for one technology. Yes a company like Facebook can deliver VR and MR but this are big established companies and will not have the need to use XR in their domain.

VR and MR bring the possibility for a startup to be king in one niche and focus to deliver the best possible consumer experience within their specific tech. Just like when you search for (catch all term) "red" you will get a top 10 of the biggest tube sites and no way a startup can win this battle but with adding VR you see on 2rd position the exact match domain / website and a lot of people search for VR+"red".

I find it funny the robert scoble hated xr so much that he ignored it at first for a longtime then mocked it for a longtime and now mentions it in his posts like it's now an accepted term.

Also, none of the commercial versions of these new 'Windows Mixed Reality' headsets are on the market yet. Who is to say that Acer and the rest wont brand them differently with little or no mention of 'Windows Mixed Reality' (unless Microsoft contracted them to do so as part of their deal)?

*And remember what name Acer have just given for their 'vr' camera...

I do actually think mixed reality/mr has a golden future, and maybe I'm just bitter that I missed the boat a little with MR (unlike Elad). I'm just playing devil's advocate really :D

No worries, the partners deal was signed on 2015.

360VRPlayer / 360VideoPlayer / VideoPlayer360

Valve just made watching 360-degree videos much easier in VR

Valve has released a beta version of Steam 360 Video Player, a native player so that users can easily watch immersive videos on their VR headsets.

360-degree videos aren’t quite as involved as the full VR gaming experience where you can move around and interact with the world around you, but are gaining popularity, with Facebook and YouTube integrating 360-degree videos into their platforms.

Up until now users wanting to watch 360-degree videos on the HTC Vive have had to install additional software, like Virtual Desktop which was time consuming and laborious.

Now Engadget reports that Valve has released Steam 360 Video Player, which not only makes 360-degree video native to the platform, taking out much of the time and effort associated with watching the immersive video format, but also ads some really useful features.
