I can see where google is charging big users of commercial sites but I see nothing for the average end user that would indicate we have to pay to use google maps.

Yup that's exactly right, end users will see no difference.

That said, businesses are accustomed to paying for services, I use google apps myself and I don't expect anything for free. Free always comes with some other price attached, I would rather pay and have 24/7 support available when I need it.

It is still free. I manage some heavy sites that rely on Google maps on every page load and yet we haven't hit their daily limit. So for a normal website I don't think there should be any issues.

Google map is free up to 25,000 map loads per day.... It's enough to start
