I noticed this morning a new column in my gmail. It looks like a green little light. When I hover over it, it says "Sender Name" uses email tracking.

I had not noticed this before.

Apparently it only shows if the email is being tracked by the sender. If not, there is no dot at all.

Do you use MailTrack? In my Gmail, this extra column appears when MailTrack is enabled.

Is mail tracking working in gmail anyway? I thought gmail pre-caches any off-site images to prevent tracking?

This has been there for months and it is not GMail but Mailtrack, even the free version.

For what it's worth, email tracking is illegal in the EU under GDPR and can result in fines up to $20M.

Edit: obviously, when people opted in it's fine.

Does that include tracking your own emails?

You mean if you track the emails you send to yourself or your own emails you send to someone else?

If you send an email to someone else and they haven't opted in that would be a no go.

Not saying that email tracking cannot be done as there's plenty of ways to make this work but if we're talking outbound without prior contact (which is concidered spamming anyway) there's no legal way to use email tracking.

Mind you, the same rules apply to everyone, not taking into account the senders geographical location, who targets someone in the EU.

Enforcement? Depends on who you target and offend by tracking their email. I'm pretty sure in 99% of the cases you'll get away with it.

I have read up on GDPR and using MailTrack.io is GDPR compliant. The service meets all requirements including opt-out.

GDPR does not attempt to stop email marketing or spam even. It is designed to protect personal data. That's why we still get spam. :)

I think there is quite a bit of misunderstanding as the how GDPR works. The good news is that most of the rules are written in simple terms so it's pretty easy to understand.

    Tracking continues!

    :)

Mailtrack is GDPR compliant, but it depends on how you use it whether YOU are GDPR compliant. Owning a gun, or facillitating anything related isn't illegal in a lot of cases. Using it to kill someone is (in most cases).

Having an opt-out option does not make you follow GDPR rules. You are required to offer an opt-out but that doesn't mean you're not required to have people opt in to email tracking in the first place.

lol, that made my day :).

a quick reasd of this addon here said somehting about relying on the images gmail attaches to emails to track if open.. so if someone is setup to block images etc.. well.. its not gonna work.

btw, I don't judge people who do use email tracking. If I were, let's say american, would I care? I don't know. Probably not, or not so much :)
