I think there is progress!

Couple of large sales suggest that people may be getting used to the new gTLD's.

Do you agree?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
a point of a brand is that consumers recognize it, remember it and come back perhaps.

.whatever is the opposite of that as people do not even know what it is and that it is a website.

this will decrease ROI not increasen it. The opposite of what a brand should do.

I think it will be interesting to see how the new gTLD domains perform at Namescon.

Currently,

coins-club - 2k
everest-cam - 1.2k

2-cool - 370
buy-tickets - 1.2k
pictures-xyz - 300
players-club - 538
porn-club - 310
polo-club - 300
revenge-cam - 350
sme-club - 300
tax-help - 1.1k
united-club - 300
web-cam - 10k

So far, they are getting bids.

It is not about getting bids.

Coins.com would be $0.5MM-1MM name. Let's say coins.club sells for $5K- $10K and it has standard renewal. That is still 1/100th of .com

Now, if a nice brandable.com is worth $3000, the .club alternative is worth around $30, not even factoring in the PV of future renewals.

Basically, for any extension to become mainstream, you need the regular brand names in that extension to have some decent value, nothing can become "mainstream" on 2L, 3L, killer dictionary words...

Thanks JB... I don't yet have confidence in investing in them too much yet.

More experienced investors like you and @Kate always say things that turn out to be right. I probably wasted a few hundred dollars on 3L.ch and Kate tried to tell me. I wish I had listened more closely.

We'll see if things change on these. I have a handful I really hope to keep for the long term.

Most of the new gTLD haters buy new gTLDs, but they don't tell anyone about this.

ha, this is what happens if you bid late at night after a workout and too much caffeine -

"I was eating my post-workout meal of steak and my vision is a little blurry because of too much caffeine"

Yep, I thought it was a .com, but it was a .cam. I think some other bidders thought the same. Thankfully, my bid was under reserve and others bid after me. So right now I own 418 domains. 417 .com, 1 .me. Sorry guys, new gtlds still suck :)

Interesting mention by Morgan Linton about new gTLDs and Namescon...

"New gTLDs – there’s a lot of buzz around new gTLDs again this year at NamesCon. I think everyone now agrees they are here to stay and I had a number of conversations with people about which ones they believe in the most. I don’t currently invest in new gTLDs (I dabbled a bit a while ago but haven’t bought any in quite a while) but I was inspired to hear stories of people who had actually been seeing some pretty solid results. My takeaway is – only the most premium names are what most people are investing in, buying a bunch of new gTLDs hoping one will be your ticket to retirement probably isn’t going to work, duh."

It is very surprising that registries/registrars that make money selling new gtlds, since even hand regs usually cost more than .com and the renewals are usually higher, are high on them, haha.

I think their models are really bad in that respect. The pricing is inconsistent and they should embrace domain investors and stop trying to be domain investors.

Yes, I agree, it is very sad!

I hand-registered domains like Game.Life Money.Life ... etc for $36 each :xf.frown:

... but, probably... it would be better and cheaper... if I register Game.com Money.com for only $10 :xf.cool:

But I think, I already lost this opportunity!!! :-,

Lots of buzz - among domainers. Among normal people - that's another story.
Just to talk to normal people, your colleagues, friends, family, and quiz them. Then you can take stock of the road ahead.

I think their models are really bad in that respect. The pricing is inconsistent and they should embrace domain investors and stop trying to be domain investors.
That is an interesting rhetorical question. Should registries embrace domain investors ? Allowing speculators to seize inventory outright is a sure way to kill a TLD in the bud (example: .eu).
On the other hand, what do you do when end users don't come. Without domainers the registrations stats would be even worse than they are today. Truth is, registries are dependent on domainers at varying degrees.
Some are in for the long haul and behave reasonably. Others just want to extract as much money as they can and must have limited faith in their own future.

Also, you have to keep in mind that many TLDs were launched by people with no domain experience. That is evident in their lack of background, and failed business models that are nothing else than wishful thinking.

I don't think new gTLDs can be considered as "mainstream" yet. Still I can see more and more sites using them. But as @Arca just mentioned, they will cause a lot of confusion if not a www. or a http:// is added!

no not at all.

especially if the domain is very long or complex.

In most cases people can remember only ".com" but not what is to the left of the dot.

It's difficult. Everyone wants to have a beautiful and short domain. But not the garbage that is on sale on the market.

Show me a good alternative to my domain Crypto.Life which I simply hand-register a few month ago just for $1.99

Show me a good alternative to my domain Game.Life which I hand-reg. for $36

Show me a good alternative to my

New.Life
Good.Money
Black.Coffee

How many of these new businesses compared to 7,500,000,000 people on earth?

everyone can easily register a domain for what they want that can be remembered by others. Even in .com I have done it several times. We also always had alternatives like .net .org .us, .co, .cc, .ws, .io etc. which are all not expensive.

Every country on earth have their own ccTLD. More than enough.

you act like nGTLDs are the only alternative. They are just one of many, not the most popular and late.
