This was a story on Yahoo.

"Promises are made to be broken, but before you let your New Year's weight-loss resolution get lost inside another pint of Ben & Jerry's, consider this: video games can not only get you in shape, they can help you stay there.

"The current "game-cercize" craze is spearheaded by Nintendo, who recently launched their exergame Wii Fit in Japan to chart-topping success, a significant achievement for a game that simulates yoga poses and exercise routines. Using a custom-built peripheral called the Wii Balance Board, players engage in a variety of physical activities aimed to build strength, improve balance and increase aerobic stamina. The board also acts as a scale, measuring weight while tracking the player's body mass index (BMI). By routinely engaging in the game's 40-plus activities, players will hopefully watch their BMI drop over time.

Set to release in early 2008 in North America, Wii Fit aims to emulate the success of older exergames, including last year's Wii pack-in smash, Wii Sports. Through simulating the swinging of a bat or a tennis racket with the console's Wii remote, players reveled as their heart rate skyrocketed and the pounds dropped away.

The benefits of such a system weren't overlooked by gym owner Nathan Mellalieu, who employs Wii Sports as a workout option at his Studeo 55 health club in Vancouver. He believes one session of Wii Sports can burn anywhere between 75 and 125 calories, although he notes that it's not a long-term solution.

"The clients are having a lot of fun with it, although it's important that people know that if they have 50 or 60 pounds to lose, the solution isn't to go buy Wii," Mellalieu said.

A study at Liverpool John Moores University in early 2007 echoes his sentiment. Researchers found that playing Wii Sports for an average of 12 hours per week could result in burning over 1800 calories, although they're quick to point out that such an activity should not replace traditional exercise.

Nintendo is certainly not the first game company to target their customers' abs. In 2005 Sony released Eyetoy Kinetic for the PS2, an exergame requiring its players to follow a twelve-week fitness course. According to research conducted by Dr. Alaisdar Thin at Heriot-Watt Univeristy's School of Life Sciences, ten minutes spent playing Kinetic is roughly equivalent to time spent with a conventional workout.

In a press release, Dr. Thin summarized, "We were interested in measuring the levels of exertion from an exercise physiology point of view and compared the average heart rate that each subject was exercising at to the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) recommended exercise heart rate range. Our findings reveal that playing these video games can provide an effective workout."

More recently, Konami's immensely popular rhythm game Dance Dance Revolution was made a key part of a fitness program introduced to West Virginia's 756 state schools. It's been such a success, a group of teachers have even launched a website aimed at educating educators on how to incorporate the technology into their own school systems. "
