Self-flying taxi to transport passengers in Dubai

An autonomous drone that can transport humans will start ferrying passengers around Dubai this summer.

The head of Dubai's transportation agency said that self-flying taxis would start taking people across the city starting from July.

The city will use the Ehang 184 for the airborne service. The Ehang is a drone that can fly without human direction and carry a single passenger and their bag. It can take one person on a journey up to 23 minutes long.

"This is not only a model, we have actually experimented with this vehicle flying in Dubai's skies," said Mattar al-Tayer, head of Dubai's transportation agency.

You can now pre-order 'the world's first certified commercial flying car'

Five years after demonstrating its first successful test flight, Dutch company PAL-V has begun accepting pre-orders for what may be the first flying car to hit the commercial market.

When driving, the Liberty takes form as an enclosed three-wheeler with propeller packed tightly to its roof. To get airborne, the propeller and tail blades expand and transform the vehicle into a gyrocopter.

The Liberty takes about 10 minutes to transform from car to copter, according to PAL-V, and has a top speed of 100mph on the ground and 112mph in the sky. On the road it boasts a range of 817 miles on a full tank. This dwindles to 310 miles once the vehicle takes off.

Airbus unveils Pop.Up: An autonomous transportation concept that uses drones to carry cars

Airbus has proposed a new modular transportation idea mixing air and ground travel that will make you feel that the future cannot get here fast enough.

Unveiled today at the Geneva International Motor show, the system, dubbed “Pop.Up,” would start with a capsule that sits in the frame of an autonomous car. When traffic gets heavy, you just call a drone using your smartphone and lift the capsule up into the air and over the heads of those poor suckers stuck in traffic sucking on exhaust fumes.

The company says a new artificial intelligence platform will help manage the Pop.Up system, letting passengers optimize the mix of modalities for their trip.

ModularEV - ModularElectricVehicle - ModularTaxi

During the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, Italdesign and Airbus world-premiered Pop.Up, the first modular, fully electric, zero emission concept vehicle system designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal transportation that makes full use of both ground and airspace.

Lilium shows maiden flight of world’s first working prototype of an electric VTOL jet

Last year, we reported on Lilium Aviation when they secured a €10 million investment from Atomico,an important global venture capital firm based in London. The Germany-based startup founded in 2015 by four aerospace engineers and product designers is developing the Lilium Jet, an electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

Today, Lilium announced that their full-scale prototype had its maiden flight and they released some impressive footage of the achievement.

The prototype is a two-seater and it managed to execute “a range of complex maneuvers, including its signature mid-air transition from hover mode to wing-borne forward flight.”

Lilium's jet-powered taxi completes its first test flights over Germany

The on-demand economy is booming and transport is one of its biggest winners.
Uber, Lyft, Grab and Hailo have conquered the on-ground, app-based, taxi service. Lilium wants to command the sky.
The aviation startup, based in Munich, Germany, has ambitions to dominate airspace and offer an on-demand flying taxi service it claims will be five times faster than a car. And while the 40-engineer firm has a long way to go to reach this vision, it has just overcome its first major hurdle following the initial test flights of its electric plane.

Uber will live stream its first Elevate VTOL summit April 25-27

while now, beginning with the release of a white paper late last year detailing what steps it thinks are required to help it get it get to the point where it might make sense to actually field an on-demand airborne ride hailing service. It announced that it would host an industry summit of people working on making VTOLs affordable and available at the time, and the first iteration of that conference is happening next week, with a live stream available for remote viewing.

Uber doesn’t really want to build flying cars, but it wants to take advantage of them to expand its service offerings and potentially do a bit more to solve the growing problem on city traffic congestion. The Elevate Summit, which it’s hosting in Dallas, Texas April 25 through the 27, is designed to bring together some of the people who might actually be building the cars, and the technology infrastructure required to make it happen.

Uber unveils plans for electric flying taxis by 2020, ChargePoint will provide charging for first stations

If you are wondering how come there are so many news and announcement about electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft lately, like Lilium’s maiden flight and Kitty Hawk coming out of stealth, it looks like it’s because they timed the releases with Uber’s Elevate Summit in Dallas this week.

Today, Uber announced its own plans to use eVTOL aircraft for a flying taxi service.
Several companies, including the ones previously mentioned, detailed their plans during the event. Uber describes the summit:
“The Summit will offer an information-packed three days during which we hope to build awareness about the Elevate mission, detail Uber’s role in the ecosystem, identify and accelerate opportunities to collaborate within the community, and define a path towards initial urban eVTOL operations.”
But of course, Uber also used the event to share its own ambitions for eVTOL aircraft and made several announcements about it.

It’s not about making the aircraft themselves, but like their current ride-sharing products, it’s about creating the platform to use them. Engadget reports:
