I've been selling domain names since 2005 and most of my biggest sales ($5000, $2000....) were made by phone for the first contact from US end users not by email, also I'm out of USA
The problem for a U.S end user (buyer) is that he have to call a INTL number if you were outside of U.S when checked the WHOIS info.
To solve this, all you have to do is to subscribe to Toll free forwarding number services you can find on Google for a small monthly fee. Add this to your Whois phone number and end users will call you more easiely than if it was a INTL number.
This can be applied to dot asia too, you can have a china number even if you live in Australia... but of course the main problem will be the language, as I don't speak chinese I won't do it but for some people who do, it's fine.
