Most of us know that .IO extension has been on fire since 2019. The extension was there for a long time though. However, during the COVID times, tech companies started to adapt and use the extension and then the number and the volume of the sales are sky rocketed. Similar story happened with .AI. Right after the launch of ChatGPT, the extension had seen massive amount of interest from AI companies and of course from the domain investors. So what's next? I shared my thoughts in my blog post and you can read the full post here: https://arifsengoren.com/2024/04/24/first-io-then-ai-whats-next/

OP, I haven't read your mentioned observations as yet But, as we know, from past experience, It isn't just the next 'Big thing' as far as extensions are concerned but, how it will be applied and used as far as the market focus is concerned.

So easy to get carried away with the 'next' extension of choice with little regard to how the market perceives its application.

Interesting article and suggestion. We will see.

It will be what founders in a niche begin to notice. .io clearly has achieved that, and it is on tech startup radar as a desired choice. The fact that .xyz was the first ICANN or country code extension so support ENS gave it a boost at just the right time, and the flood of decentralized startups often looked there. An early big adopter can have a big impact – at face value it seems surprising that .so would be adopted by startups, but a number have, probably strongly influenced by Notion using one.

I think each successful alternative to .com helps make it slightly easier for those that follow. The adoption of .tv, .co and others made it easier for those that followed.

I would suggest that we may be evolving to many having some impact, rather than a few like .io and .ai dominating the alternative landscape, but we will see.
