WASHINGTON, July 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- GoDaddy.com, Inc. and Afilias USA, Inc., have teamed up to create The Domain Name Alliance Registry, LLC ("Alliance Registry"), a joint venture seeking to assume stewardship of the usTLD, America's sovereign space on the Internet. Yesterday, Alliance Registry submitted a proposal in response to the request for quotations issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for a registry operator for the usTLD.

"Today, the usTLD ranks 9th among the world's country code domains, despite America's leadership of the Internet and the most robust domain growth market in history. Now is the time to change usTLD leadership and put it on a growth track," said Roland LaPlante, Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer for Afilias. Added Warren Adelman, Go Daddy's President and Chief Operating Officer, "We believe Alliance Registry pools the strengths of its partners, Go Daddy and Afilias, to offer usTLD superior technology, enhanced marketing, and focused administration to improve this critical national resource."

The bid submitted by Alliance Registry includes several key elements that would improve the .us domain registry, both in technological security and marketing tactics. Over the past 6 years, the .us domain has underperformed relative to its international competition and Alliance Registry has the resources and the capabilities to make major improvements. Some of these improvements include:

-- Reduced pricing for usTLD registrations to make them more affordable
and deliver greater value to the usTLD community
-- Greater volume, growth, and usage of the usTLD stimulated by registry
enhancements and marketing programs that have been proven to work by
Alliance Registry's joint owners
-- Enhanced Locality space support to enable every city and town in
America to have its own dedicated space within the usTLD (e.g.
anytown.us)
-- World class stability and security of the registry platform and DNS
services supporting the domain
-- Expanded administration services to facilitate oversight and provide
better counsel for the DoC
-- Enhancing kids.us so it becomes the feature-rich, safe online
environment for America's children it was envisioned to be

In addition, the proposal outlines a proven plan to ensure a smooth transition, based on the experience of its partner Afilias in transitioning numerous top-level domains and with Go Daddy's experience in ensuring harmless data transitions for consumers. DoC is expected to award the new contract by September, with the administrator taking full responsibility of the usTLD when the contract with the current provider expires on October 26, 2007.

During a news tele-conference earlier today, Brian Cute, Alliance Registry's new Director of .us activities said, "This is an exciting opportunity for us to work closely with DoC to realize the full potential of the usTLD." He continued, "We believe it's time for a change, and Alliance Registry is uniquely positioned to take usTLD to its rightful position as a leading country code domain."

Overall, sounds like very good news. However, I hate to see the phrase "reduced pricing". Dot us registration is competitively priced already. I think .info has been tagged by many as a spam magnet due to its ultra cheap fees.

The exciting part about this is GoDaddy's marketing muscle. Whether you like their approach or not, they went from obscure to #1 based on their marketing, imagine what they could do for .US.

I wonder how the drop situation would change. GD is one of the better places to catch .US drops these days and this could put them in a conflict of interest situation. Exciting news - I hope this isn't one of those situations where the encumbant wins and the request for tender is just a DOC formality.

I have contacted DNAlliance to see if there is a public comment site where US citizens and others with a US interest can lend their support to the DNAlliance application. Will report back their response.

Another good thing is Godaddy has a "full Time Lobbyist" in Washington. For all we know, they have been lobbying for a change for months.

Either way, this is only good news for .US!

Anyone notice the interesting statistic:

Only 2.5% of the American Internet Marketshare is captured by .Us. Shows lots of room for growth.

If I read that graph and text correctly it says that the .us extension currently gets 2.5% of the cctld marketshare of domain registrations not 2.5% of the American marketplace. Since late 2004 it has fallen (really not kept up with others) from 3.5% to 2.5%. So out of all the CCTLDS - .us gets 2.5% of the registrations. And that doesn't include the GTLDs like .com/net/org.

With a mature consumer market of 300 million people (okay about 200 million with active wallets or purses) a promoted and utilized .US extension has a LOT of room top run.

The price cut mentioned in the release was only $0.25 for the wholesale cost of a .us domain. Not a fire sale price range like the .infos. Although it is interesting that Afilias is the one running/promoting/giving away for next to nothing the .info names.

This is great news :)

I wonder how long it will take to migrate the domains/projects.

I spoke with the DoC a few weeks ago. It appears that the zipcode directory will be one of the projects on the new registrars list to complete. :)

One way or another it looks like that .US is going to get more attention whether its through the incumbent or a new candidate as the registry. All this activity is going to be good for .US fans in the future. This might be a good time to find a few domains before .US becomes America's favorite extension. IMO

Just registered these:

BUYSELLHOUSES.US
CHILEPEPPER.US
FORTDAVIS.US
JERSEYCITYHOMES.US
OLDTRUCKS.US
PLUGINCARS.US
PRICERIGHT.US
PRIMELAND.US
REMODELINGTIPS.US
UNCONDITIONAL.US

hopefully, this proposal goes through. Great speculative opportunities for both buyers and sellers right now: "Get these names BEFORE .us explodes!"

One big area of concern here:

Enhanced Locality space support to enable every city and town in America to have its own dedicated space within the usTLD (e.g. anytown.us)

What might that mean to those of us who already own town and city .US names?

Saw that, too. And am also curious as to the impacts of not just anycity.us, but other variations.

That's indeed great news for an undervalued extension. Pulling my .us from the market and placing it "on hold"... time to pick up some more LLL.us, if it's not already too late....

Landslide drop of LLL.us values appears to have stopped (and may be turning around). 3character dot com shows a +$5 increase in value for LLL.us from July to August. ...glimmers of market confidence peering around the corners...

Which doesn't come as a surprise.
I can hardly wait for Fonzie to read this thread, not only is he the strongest believer that NP has regarding the .US domains but he's also been VERY busy picking them up left and right.

Good call, fonz!....i'm jealous!
