Domain said it was available on NameCheap. Placed order but domain didn't come through. Contacted support and they said domain is in grace period for about 8 more days. I researched and learned about domain catching but the domain is not an any catching sites.

I then searched the domain on namesilo and a few others and was directed to make an offer on sedo. I have made offers in the past on sedo before but never reached an agreement.

I think what is happening is that the registrar (maybe 1&1) submits expiring domains automatically to sedo to see if there is interest. If I were to make an offer, I feel that it could show the registrar there is interest in the domain and the registrar could:

A. Ask a very high price
B. Keep the domain themselves instead of letting it expire
C. Go back to the original owner and let them match my offer to keep it (original owner may not even know it is about to expire)

I would think maybe the best thing to do is to lay low and keep an eye on if it goes off of sedo, the whois changes, namesilo will let me register without sedo? Is there something I can do similar to catching if it doesn't show up on catching sites only on sedo?

From the whois info can I get an idea when the domain might become available for real? Also, the Registry Expiration Date isn't until February of 2021 but its pending deletion so I don't know if it will become available soon regardless. Thanks for any help!

Here is the whois info (I adjusted the dates by a few days each to keep the actual domain anonymous)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
UPDATE: I read the thread titled:

Strategy for Expiring/Deleting Domains

And I think I understand that since it is pending delete, my best approach is to do backorders with the 3 mayor players, correct?

I downloaded the drop dates from DropCatch as a csv file for the next 4 days but it doesn't show in that list. I just am wondering if there is something I am missing and this domain is not actually going to drop. It doesn't show up in auction or the 4 day pending delete list. Maybe it will show up in the pending delete list soon.

Is it better to place the backorder sooner or later closer to the drop day?

It won't matter on your chances of getting the domain but the sooner it's done the better.

Also just checked the whois, looks like it's been renewed for 9 more years!

Someone caught it or renewed it and did not change the nameservers yet. Those NS are applied by NS in the grace renew period and remain when caught until they are changed. The exp date is all that matters.

What do you mean? I didn't even say the domain in my post or leave in the actual info in the whois. I changed up the whois just a bit so no one could know what domain I wanted.

Actually, I got it! I thought I didn't because the drop came and went with no emails and the domain just disappeared from the drop catching sites. I tried again to buy with my registrar but it wasn't successful.

Then later today I checked my email and found I HAD gotten it with DropCatch. To top it all off, I only had to pay $15 and that included one year of privacy and email with NameBright. Not sure I'll use the email but nice gesture.

So yes, I am glad I came to this forum and learned about all of this!!!

Thanks for weighing in on this guys. It was really the post:

Strategy for Expiring/Deleting Domains
(Can't link to it apparently)

That helped me so much. I think I will write a blog post about my experience. Or maybe I won't. If I can get sweet domains like this maybe best not to tell LOL.
