I see this a lot.

A few reasons I can think of:

They built the site before deciding on and registering a name;

They already had a (live) site and re-branded with a new name;

They used a template to have the site up within a very short amount of time.


Anyone have any others?

So, all server files exist, but connection to domain was missing.

Create your niche landing pages then find domains to match. Eg you buy 1000 templates and realize that some generic names are available to suit end up with right name and right content.
