I am interested in getting an estimate on how much is spent each year on domain name registration and renewal fees. How many domain names are registered now?

Is there a domain statistics website that has information on this as it would be more useful information if I could quote a source?

I am interested in both the fees that the domain registrar and the domain hosting companies charge.

Edit: I've done some searching and found enough info for me. It appears that domain registration fees is between 1-2 billion dollars per year. Over $1 billions per year is enough information.

In a very general sense, this basic info again confirms is the simple fact domaining is a thriving industry. However, with the exception of the overall few people who got in early enough to secure the greater names, the house still has the advantage. It would be interesting for you to add the ratio or average money from domain name sales per year and compare it to the regfees paid per year.

Many times since the dot bubble began (and maybe even in a previous NP thread at some point), domaining has been compared to that of a casino. Sure, gamblers (domainers) may come and go with some winning and making money (domain sales), but in the end, the major advantage and money making always goes to the house (the casino). We may get comps for gambling in their casino (registrar discount codes, free email, free website), all in an effort to keep us there long enough to give back the money won and/or give even more money we didn't win. Despite gambling (domaining) being essentially a losing activity for the greater percentage who takes part, many do it anyway.

There are more than 200,000,000 domains registered worldwide, so, yes, at an average of $8 per domain per year, the total amount of renewal fees is more than $1.5 billion per year.

I'm not sure if there is any room for "innovation" in the Registrar business that will drive competition.

Pricing, is the main ingredient that makes people stick with their registrar (assuming security and efficient service are identical).

If you're with Godaddy, the constant renewal coupons alone will keep you from jumping overboard.

I even wonder if the entire "Domain Registration" business (starting from ICANN's asking price), is blatantly overpriced.

It doesn't look like it would cost 8 bucks just to jot down a name and keep it safe on a database running from very cheap disk space.

Here is one
http://www.domaintools.com/internet-statistics/

I found another site that showed 84 million country code domains being registered by 2010.

The combination of the two gave me enough information to show that domain registration is over 1 billion per year. Based on domaintools, it appears that around 73,000 domains have dropped to day. Is it correct to multiply by reg fees and 365 and estimate $200million dollars worth of domains being dropped?

I think that there is room for innovation.
