Is this a common issue? You see domains selling for 5 or 6 figures in an area so you buy similar domains swinging for a home run? Really common with Meta domains currently. Is it just fomo?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Seems to be the focus for many, especially new domainers. I wish them luck. I'll stick with what has worked for me over many years.

If domains are a lottery ticket, I think the least a domainer can do is rig the machine that distribute the balls, by having good domains in the first place. FOMO does exist, but that FOMO is blinded by forgetting one thing: Some domains in a trend will sell well, most won't. IMO

No, they're not.
In every Market; there are market trends, there are also seasons.
We are now in Meta (keyword) Season.
And most importantly, domaining is about keywords, and how it aligns with happenings in the world with market expectations.

What?

What the hell is a domain season? It is a trend, not a season - no such thing as a domaining season - what is currently going on with Meta/Metaverse keywords has happened loads of times before (just not as crazy) people have tried to leap onto the trend and try their luck......nothing wrong with that, it is mostly FOMO but people will always try their luck.....

With keywords some have stood the passage time and sell no matter what the current fad/trend is....Data, Home/s, Tech, Smart, Travel, Media, World, Go, Shop, Design etc etc etc etc etc - they don't have to align with "happenings in the world"........ they are evergreen.....

Domaining is a lottery but ROI of a standard lottery is less than 100% for sure.
In domaining ROI depends on skills and strategies.

Domaining is not lottery. To be successful, you need to be hard working, should be ready to learn, shrewd and have some luck.

Well, the idea of buying names based on previous sales - is nothing new. The difference here is that ''meta'' and it's late sales are hyped too much.

But the key word in your question is ''similar''. If one is able to analyze and determine truly similar names - then it's awesome, but unfortunately most people bought utter trash after they saw these $$$$$ in a couple deals done.

What is a FOMO?

Season = Fad/Trend (Euphemism)

Keywords that stood the passage of time, It depends bon your perspective, because trends affects these keywords too.
