I have a domain backordered but it seems to be stuck in the redemption period. This is what I got when I ran a whois on the name:

"Created on 2001-04-26 - Expires on 2015-04-26 - Updated on 2015-06-06"

I did notice that it is registered with a foreign nameserver (DOMAINEXP01.ONAMAE.JP) so maybe that has an affect? Anyone have any ideas when this name will drop?

Even though the domain has expired, it will stay in the expired status 25-45 days, after which it will change to redemption status for another 30 days. In this period, the original registrant can still recover the name, but at a higher price. After this period, it enters the final deletion stage which is typically 5 days and then it will drop. They may have gone with the full 45 day expire period, which is why it is taking so long.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong...

When a domain expires, registrars typically keep it in "expiration" (Which is formally called Auto-Renew Grace Period) for anywhere between 30 and 45 days. On the 46th day, the registrar will be eating the cost of the renewal, so they will try to delete the domain somewhere between the 35th and 45th day. From what I've witnessed, a lot of registrars delete the domain around day 40 or 41.

In this example, the domain was deleted on day 42 (06/06/2015). With my extensive calculations, that puts the PendingDelete date on July 7th, with the domain dropping and being available for registration on July 13th, 2015.

I hope this helps you out a bit. It's a long process from when a domain expires to the day it becomes available again, and is typically around 75-80 days total.

Thank you both! That helps quite a bit.

So it finally went into pending deletion. I guess it pays to be patient. :)

I am following an expired domain that was deleted 7/07, which now makes it 32 days, but it's still listed as reactivation period. Can this period be longer than 30 days?

Status on the the domain I mentioned above changed today. When I look it up on whois, it says:

"Domain not found."

"The requested second-level domain was not found in the Registry or Registrarโ€™s WHOIS Server."

It's still not available for registration though.
